The Lightning is no ordinary pickup truck. First and foremost it was made for performance, but you can haul stuff with it...not that you would. But it begs the question Mr. Clean-do you haul with your lightning? |

Seadoos and boats is all. |

I can't say for sure. I'm a dyno guy, not a car guy. He just said he replaced the blower pulleys. |
It already had a blower. He just changed the pulleys and added a tighter belt. |
He was pushing 500lb of torque pretty easy. Add in that this was at the end of...maybe 15 or 20 runs (we were doing alot of testing to make sure his dyne was repaired and reading correctly), so you've got a hot engine, warmer air later in the day, the intercooler was hot, etc etc. Early runs were pushing 430+HP, but again...seems to push 410HP as a constant. That is impressive. |

It's called a C6 Z06. It's 60k cheaper and all the car mags like it better than the ford. |
SVT Cobra: Good looking, but still a Damned Old Ford.
Ford GT: Most Uncomfortable thing I've ever sat in. Nothing Ford makes is worth 20,000 much less 150,000. And NOTHING with a GM nameplate on it is worth 60,000. You can't polish a turd, no matter how big a sticker price you put on it. A C6 is just a more expensive turd. SG |
I'll take "No Shit" for $500, Alex! And 400 horses ain't shit. The 352FE in my pickup puts out more than that at a lower RPM. |
That rocked! Sounds like a winner to me. |
No, it really isn't. |
Not if you live in magazine world. I read somewhere that 400 horsepower isn't very much and that other cars are faster. |
I stomped the pedal at 40mph and ran it up to 140mph. The dyno monitor is off to my left and has a speedo screen visible from the driver's seat. I lifted off the throttle momentarily because I thought it was gonna leap from the rollers. I think it peaked at 826hp. That's with a very conservative tuneup too... It still has another nitrous system available that we haven't hooked up yet. That's good for another 400-500horsepower... |
the engine in my 5 year old TRUCK makes 340hp/450ft/lbs
i remain unimpressed |
Uhhh, have you not heard of the new Z06? It comes within a friggin' nat's hair of matching the performance numbers with a normally aspirated engine, and for HALF the costs And much better gas mileage . |
I wasnt sure. However, when one is talking about the car itself and not what someone did to it, what I said makes perfect sense. |
SVT is a seperate thing. Just like SLP engineering is seperate from GM. The regular Ford people couldnt handle making this It is a bad ass car though.
If Chevy never made anything that ugly, I dont care how powerful or fast they made their cars. |

Whats a Vette cost again? Whats the difference between 4.6 liters and 5.7 and 6.0 again? Yeah thats what I thought. |
Oh man, I forgot that Chevy didnt put the 400hp LS2 into any GTO's. Weird. And a Mustang and a Corvette are 2 totally different classes of cars. How fast does a Cobra run in the quarter stock? |
And considering a 5.9l is a 360 and a 5.7l is a 350/348, a 6.0 would be about a 363-364ci motor.
A 4.6l would be about a 285ci motor. What's your point? |
Incorrect! The 2005 GTO came with the 400hp LS2. krfan1 |

Let us review some highlights of Ford engine history:
1932 Henry Ford brings the world the affordable V8, the competition is still making I4 or I6 engines 1965 Ford builds the 427 cammer engine 657 bhp @ 7500rpm, 550 lb-ft This is from a stock, naturally aspirated factory engine Current day: Ford brings the world the affordable OHC V8 Long live the Modular |

Whatever.....Chevy/GM.... You know what I meant. |
500 hp plus out of the new Z06......... |
Yeah uh, thats a given.... |
HOLY SHIT FINALLY!! I thought all you "die hard car guru's" (yeah fuckin right) would completely overlook the fact that NO current factory mustang has anything bigger then a 5.4 in it. And the GT comes with a measly 4.6. Lets compare that to those 383's and what is the Vette, a 5.7/6.0 (dependin on year) up to the Z06 which is what, a 7 liter?? Yeah, I should fucking HOPE the Vette motor can outdo the Mustang motor, its damn near 50% bigger depenfing on exactly which motor you have. Thats pretty much a no shit Sherlock, its gonna have more oomph to it. Also, compare that Mustang GT horsepower/times to its price. In its pricerange the Mustang GT is hands down the hottest car in its class. End of story. |
300hp (overrated) that does above 13.0 in the 1/4mile. 500hp(underrated) that does 12.0 or lower in the 1/4mile. When the Corvette had a 5.7l in it, it still had more than 300hp. In fact, it had more than 350hp. And would still run almost 13.0's in the 1/4, if not into. Lets see. Stock/na 5.7l = 400hp. Supercharged 4.6l = 390hp. |
So, why dont you just say that 5.7L sucks because a turbo'd V6 can make more horsepower. Yes, the 4.6L and 5.7L are both V8's. Otherwise, the 5.7 is a helluva lot bigger. It SHOULD make more horsepower. If it didnt, I'd be real worried about exactly what GM was doing. Additionally, that 300 HP is not underrated. I've seen a few dyno sheets. If you factor in 15% drivetrain loss, its over 300 ponies at the crank. So, I'd say both are rated appropriately. And seeing as the 4.6 is quite a bit smaller then the 5.7 it damn well better make more horsepower. Shit, your comparing what,a 280 to a 347? |
 about your first part. And you're right, the 300hp part isnt "under"rated. Its overrated. It has *consistently* shown up on dynos at 270-285hp, at the crank. While the Corvette has shown that it is putting out more than 525-540hp at the crank on the dynos. |
I'm sorry, but you're wrong on this. Check out mustangforums.com. There are tons of people that post dyno charts of cars in stock form, and I'm seeing close to that at the wheels, not the crank. |
Bullshit Bullshit Bullshit Bullshit Bullshit Bullshit Want me to keep going? Your number is right, your location is WRONG. Learn how to read a dyno please. Thats an average of roughly 275 at the wheels. If you go with the standard of 15% loss on the drivetrain your at roughly 320 ponies. Yeah. Ford overrated the motor. They learned hard, and they learned good on the Cobra's a few years back. Your car had DAMN well better make the claimed power. And they wont be making that mistake again for quite some time. And while we're pulling numbers out of our ass, show me ONE Vette that make 540 at the crank in stock form. You cant. I goddamn gaurentee it. Thats WELL over 600 ponies at the wheels. |
Is it true the SVT Cobra engines tend to start to blow out at 30-40k miles?
Methinks you have this a little backwards... |
New ones (5.4) or old ones (4.6)? I know of no problems on either line, but obviously it depends how much you use those ponies. |
DOH! THis is what happens when you drink n post. |

Here's a VERY accurate horsepower calculator...
Keep in mind, it's only as accurate as the info it's given. You can change the inputs up or down to see what combo's will give specific ET's and such. It's ALWAYS been within a tenth and 2mph of my actual times I've run. www.race-cars.net/calculators/horsepower_calculator.html My Buick T-type ran 11.15 @ 121mph and weighs exactly 3630 with me in it. The local Chassis dyno showed 498hp at the rear wheels... Here's what the online HP calculator shows: |
I own a 03 Cobra and with less than $3k in mods went from 390hp to 500hp. Go to svtperformance.com and you will see 03/04 Cobras making 600-800hp with Kenne Bell supercharges or twin-turbos. The point is that these cars respond to modding much better than N/A push-rod engines that require head and cam work to achieve significant power gaines.
Hmm, I guess the multiple car magazines that tested and dynoed the GT's had something wrong with them, because I recall seeing more than 4 different car magazines testing the new Mustang GT's and NOT ONE dynoed within 15hp of 300hp. It's always funny when magazines test cars, because their results are always different than regular people's. Regular people's that just take their car to a dyno shop and have it tested rather than a car magazine who's done it for 20+ years and have their own dyno experts and whatnot. Weird. |

the size of an engine has very little bearing on HP. does have quite a bit to do normally with TORQUE, but not HP. else we'd all be drag racing dump trucks wouldn't we? |

The achilles heal of the cobra is it's cooling. Most yahoos slap on a pulley and start burning tires. They neglect the $2000 upgrade tey need to do to the heat exchange and the engines crack on the back cylinders. Owners that improve their cooling don't have this issue. As for the GT, while it's nice to have another muscle car in this day an age, The GTO is eating it's lunch. LS2 GTOs are running low 13s and the new GT is doing mid to high 13s. That's stock, of course. |
Why don't we all agree on something and stick to hating ricers??? Ford or Chevy is still better than a huge wing and coffee can exhaust tip on your momma's Maxima!
With a couple of simple upgrades, my new stang is faster. And it doesn't look like a fat Cavalier. Man, we fight over cars too much. Why can't people just buy what they like, and appreciate what somebody else got? Somebody makes a car buying decision, and all of a sudden EVERYBODY else is a complete moron for not making the same decision. |
