Can some coffee grinder also grind up nuts, like walnuts, seeds, etc.? My mom is a vegetarian and she said she thought some did. If so, I'm going to get her one for Christmas. Does anyone know? Would it say on the box? |

Any coffee grinder can grind spices and seeds. Just make sure to clean it with rice between grindings. A burr grinder is highly superior to a blade grinder. A blade grinder heats up whatever it's grinding, and a burr one won't. Less flavor loss. ETA: If you grind spices, you shouldn't use it for coffee. |

There are a couple of kinds of coffee grinders. The ones that look like a clear lid over a small metal bowl with a couple of blades will do nicely for small amounts of spices/nuts, etc. I use one for spices. The Burr style coffee grinders (basically a couple of small, toothed wheels) are pretty much strictly for coffee--they tend to be more expensive anyway. A small 2 cup food processor would probably work best for what you are describing--they are pretty cheap. AFARR |
For press pot coffee you need a nice, even coarse grind. I used to use a blade grinder and it sucked. Then I had a cheapo burr grinder and it sucked too. I ended up getting a Starbucks Barista (made by Solis) and I'm very happy with it. |
