We were stuck on the same kind of awful slowpoke machines until just after Christmas of last year. My computer was a Celeron 400mhz with 256mb of RAM. The motherboard was a low end DFI model of some sort with a SiS chipset. The CD-ROM tray stopped working ~2 years before the higher-ups saw fit to replace everything. We would've been f**ked if the system had crashed and taken the HDD with it. As a matter of fact it did crash for good one day before the new system was installed. We had to take the HDD out and put it in another machine to retrieve data. Our new machines are Dell slimline towers with fancy LCD monitors. They work very well for their intended purpose. I wouldn't want a setup like this for home use, but it is heaven compared to those crappy old 3rd rate crash fests. They're in the back room now collecting rust, dust, and mildew. FYI never sit a tower on the floor of a room with a lot of foot traffic. Dirt will clog up every hole in the case in no time flat. Rust will soon follow. Galland |

My computer is so old, it's version of windows has leaded glass....... It's so old instead of a calculator it has an abacus.... It's so old I have to crank the handle on the side to dial up....... hock.gif |
Mine so old... that it runs on kerosene. My software isn't "Windows", it's "Windhole" |
That Ultra 5's just getting broken in. 2.0 PC (2 or so years old. I've avoided getting it replaced, it's set up the way I like it.) Sun Blade 2500 (Couple of months old) |
Say what you will about the HP Pavilions Walmart sells. But mine is 5 yrs old and still hanging in there. Even with WindowsME. ![]() I'm hoping to build something a bit more modern in another year or so. Something that'll handle a digital SLR camera. 'Cause this thing has a near fatal stroke, or aneurysm, or something with pics much bigger than 12mgs. You ought to see what a 50meg photo does to it.

Over 2 years. IBM A31P laptop with an Intel 2.00GHZ Pentium 4, 512 Mb RAM, 80 GIG HD, and 64Mb video card. It used to be great becasue it would play a lot of the new games out there. Now its just another work tool. ![]() Maybe I can upgrade the way I did before by getting my laptop stolen. I'm sure my company will be so happy. |
We got some at work the letters are worn off the keyboard and there are deep wearmarks in the keys |

cure for old computer: take an ordinary lead pencil. rub it on a nail file or fine sand paper to generate a pile of graphite powder (a half sugarcubes worth, may take more than one pencil). turn off your computer. blow the graphite powerder in the vent holes. plug in computer (try not to stand next to it, just in case). usually the graphite will find something to short-over, and you get a new computer . Obviously, this won't work if they are just going to replace your computer with another POS from the warehouse where they keep the lost ark, but maybe you'll get lucky in the hardware upgrade lottery. |

a 9V battery touched to random places on the motherboard works too. I would do it, but I know it would take over 6 months to get somebody elses hand me down pos. They wont even let me bring in one from home. |
how do ya get XP pro on 2 GB HD???? |
no, how did you get it on a original pentium. that is the question |
No that question in why???? I love the boxes where the 'buddy', 'hooked 'em up' and put a VLK ver of XP Pro on a 300mhz machine and then they wonder why it's so slow.....

About 9 months old Dual core P4 3.2ghz/2gb ram/1mb cache twin 200gb sata hd in a stripe 19" lcd DVDRW, nvidia graphics, every data card interface from the last 5 years. I turned off dual core support because I do primarily database development work. No one else is accessing my machine, so I want 100% of the processor for myself. |

Now its just another work tool.
