This is for guys who have been under fire, and have shot back. You know how they say that in a gunfight or in a battle instinct takes over and you execute the same way that you have trained, is that true or do you have to force yourself into the fight?

Mostly training, but a little of both I would say.

After my first experience, I looked back, and really could not remember what I had done, It took awhile for me to put it all together, so I would say training took over

You have to fight your natural instinct sometimes, the natural thing you want to do is curl up in a ball and avoid being shot.

+1. A little surreal at first but then it was time to get to work.

The purpose of the training is to give you a 'survival package' of learned skills that you will hopefully remember and act in a manner that will overcome your natural instinct to crawl under your helmet and hide. For most FNG's it works. The FNG's who freeze become casualties rather quickly. Charles.

i heard gunfire but i still didnt believe it was coming at me. almost a little incredulous. are they shooting at ME????

but i would have to say yes. when youre putting rounds down range you hear all those things you had yelled at you in SOI.

Once I figured out that yes, that tracer is actually aimed at me, ("Hey.. that sounds like gunfire. Might be close enough we can do something about it... Oh look! Tracers! Cool!!! Oh shit!") I guess training took over. At least, I know I yelled 'Scan right' before I did anything else, so the gunner was cued on quickly.
Somewhere in there I got down in the tank, but I completely missed the stream of curses coming from my loader as he took cover :-)

I remember dropping. Guys that saw it said I went down so fast they thought I was hit. Everything came together pretty quickly after that.

Only time I didnt like any of it was coming home on the convoy to Kuwait.  Every other time I just reacted, didnt even think about it.  I think a lot about it now.

Control your fear and anticipate a strong shot of adrinaline.

Control your breathing if firing from a stationary position.

Fire disipline, don't just popp off rounds in hast with no target aquired.

Don't get up or advance too quickly even if the coast looks clear [flank if possible].

Make sure you have inserted a fresh magazine and check chamber before moving up or entering a structure.

Look, listen, locate and destroy enemy with superior firepower if available.

The quality of all the units training can be very well assesed the first 5 minutes of the first action.

But do ya'll remember the feeling right after the fight.....jumpy, shaking like hell, and totally geeked out...lol.

But to answer your question, training...right after the WTF reaction.
