I have a one year old male, beautiful intelligent dog, problem is he does not like strangers and has nearly bitten three who have made the mistake of reaching over the fence to pet him. When my grown children came home for Thanksgiving and he growled at my oldest son, Mike slapped the hell out of him., when the dog realized what happened he growled again, Mike slapped him harder, the dog became very friendly to him for the rest of the visit. I've been told its simply a dominance/territory thing and he does not like strangers in his area. He was a complete wimp with my 21 year old daughter but did not like my middle son but didn't get agressive. Otherwise he's a perfect lab, The only place he has done this is at home. He is well over 100 lbs, has a huge head, and is a darling with my wife and me. I also have two other dogs and they never have a problem with each other. He is a great watchdog, I have them fenced in a four acre wooded area around my house. He was given to me at six months from a family with three small children, he was too rough with them. Is this normal?

Thanks

mine are like that with strangers if i'm not around. if i'm with the strangers the dogs are as sweet as can be.

BTW both of mine have been neutered, but i pity the stranger that slaps one of them.

NUT HIM.

The aggressive behavior is not to be tolerated and taking off the boys will help.   If you want to be kind,
get him a set of Neuticles so he still has something to lick.

I've seen more than one black lab with some aggressive tendencies.    My response is to beat the
shit out of them until they roll over and got TOTALLY submissive to me.   They won't even look
at me funny, then.

I pity the lab when a stranger slaps him with cylindrical lead hand.

I have a 100 pound plus lab,he is aggressive until he sees that i am ok with the person. On the otherhand if he still does not like a person then i will not trust them because dogs know when someone is hiding something. they are an excellent judge of a persons character.

Thats one reason I usualy get female dogs. That and they are great wth kids and seem to have a built in who is good and who is bad detector. I know its not scientific but female dogs just seem to know al about a person demeanor. Great gauges as to who you are meeting its to see the dogs reaction.

Ok the main reason is they dont have their sack hanging all over the place.

I call it a God collar because you put the remote in your pocket and never let the dog see you trigger it. That way the dog learns that a wrathful GOD is watching, and he learns that GOD intervenes when he wants to bow up on little children.

Never had a problem with a male Lab.

OTOH, I really don't mind if he wants to defend my home either.

I had a lab/brittney mix.  I could stick my face between his two front legs and pull hard as I could under his chin and he'd never make a peep.  He would growl any time my brothers got within a foot of his face.  He obviously knew who was the boss.  The only people he really hated were blacks and the mailman.  One time we had a black mailman filling in for our usuall fat white guy and he broke down the screen door and bit him in the leg.  My dad pulled him off after he got maced.... The mace didn't even bother him.

I am a K-9 handler. We have a black Lab trained in narcotics detection. When i was in training,  I was taught to give a negative response to a negative behavior. You give one command. If they do not respond correctly, you give them a correction. You should not have to repeat your self more than twice. A correction for us was a stiff pull on a choke-chain. Not a soft pull, you need to get thier attention. The moment you dont correct them and sit there and yell at them, they have you. Even a well trained dog with test thier owners. Also socializing you dog is important. Take him with you to different places. The more they are around other people , the calmer they will get. Keep them on short leash at first. One bite and you could end up in court or jail.  Eletric collars are nice, but dont get trigger happy with them. Dogs can build tolerance quick and might like it.
