Pennsylvania Police Look For Way Around Language Barrier

Story by wgal.com

Lancaster police are trying to erase language barriers with Spanish-speaking residents.

Some officers went through an intense course in Indiana to learn Spanish. Officers say learning Spanish helps them interview witnesses.

"Automatically when you walk up to them they're like, 'Why do you want to talk to me?' After you start speaking in their language, they let the walls down. They are more willing to give you information and to talk you," said Officer Kirk Wolfe.

The department wants to see how successful the training is before deciding whether to send additional officers to the language course.

I wonder how much this language course cost and what are the costs to backfill the officers patrol position with overtime whaile he's away? Probably more than a bunch of bus ticket from Penn to tijuana would cost.

Seems like it'd be tough to be an effective cop if you don't speak the local language.

I heard an arab guy talking about how he was approached by Saddam loyalists in Iraq who started giving the biz about who was he, why was he in that neighborhood. There were Marines walking past on patrol as this happened, they had no clue what was going on.

Nail, meet head....

You'd be amazed the stuff I hear out of hand, while some of the 'locals' are yammering away in espanol, assuming that the stupid gringo cop doesn't speak it.

I consider it essential to officer safety.

With the amount of illegals they bust on I-80 in Mercer County on a regular basis, I'd say it might be a good idea.

I think they do a better job there than the border patrol does.

Fo Sho!

But Spanish should not be the local language in Penn. Understandable in Texas or Southern California.  unforgivable in the north east.

Now if only ther INS would raid all of Allentown we would be in business. When i go to the Lehigh Valley Mall i only wonder how many of the majority there are illegals. Thats not even getting into the huge arab population....
