I think we've covered this subject before, but I can't remember the legality of it.  I as a consumer, am under no obligation to show my receipt when asked for by one of the "checkers" when leaving department stores.  Is this correct?  What could the stores do anyway if I didn't show them my receipt.

I don't know about other states, but here in SC the law recognizes the rights of the store.  They have a right to protect themselves against theft.  Granted it doesn't give them the right to beat people to death like the local Best Buy has done twice, but they do have reasonable powers including holding someone until the police arrive.z

You can refuse to let them inspect your bags filled with your property, but they have a right to deny you entrance in the future, and/or call the cops to arrest you for trespassing should you attempt to re-enter.

It all about control.

I like to make them hold my bags, as I go through every pocket.
