I've got a problem.  My hotmail junk mailbox was getting something like 75 junk messages a day.  Now, I get some junk, but this was more than usual, so I started looking at it.  Many of the messages have spoof addresses that make it look like they come from either people in my address book, companies I've done business with in the past, or ISPs I've used.  WTF?  I know it's not just some kind of virus that's gotten into my address book-there's nothing on my computer that would point out an ISP I stop using four years ago.

Anybody?

call your ISP and see if they have any spam filtering services they can add to the account.  Some of them are extremely effective.

Some of them undoubtedly come from people you do know, but who are infected with virii that allow their machines to be used to relay spam.

Or you yourself are infected.  It does happen!

OK, ya'll are missing my concern.  I don't care about getting spam and this is a web-based email account so I doubt that an ISP filter will have anything to do with it.

My concern is that there's something new here with spam that I haven't seen before.  There's a bot, or something, that's got access to multiple sources of information somehow connected to me-prior ISPs I've used, companies I've dealt with, newspapers I've registered with, and email addresses of my friends.  None of these items could come from a single source of information, i.e. my computer.  Now, am I incorrect, or is this something new that I should be concerned about?

btw, I also just spoke with a friend of mine whom I don't contact over the computer and she's been getting the same thing.  Anybody else noticed this unusually well-targeted spam lately?
