How many people here, if it were legal, would open carry an AR, or any rifle for that matter?  Do I really need to ask?

If it were legal to have an AR on you at all times, round chambered, safety on.

I know I would, and it really wouldn't be all that different from concealed carry really.

That would make quite a sight in the mall at Christmas time though...

Anyone think it would be a bad idea overall?

Its legal in Oregon but I've never gotten the nerve to do it.  I have tought about it though, just to be onry.

*ETA* I should add that I open carry all the time around my house.  I run with my dogs daily with my AR and I open carry it from my house and my run route.

uhhh.. no.

Unless you have it at the low ready all the time, its useless.

When I was deployed to New Orleans we had to have our M4s slung across out backs... so gangster could have shot up the entire patrol before any of us had our weapons ready to shoot back.

Open carry is legal in KY, but I usually don't do so because it eliminates the element of surprise.  Also, I guarantee that open carry of an AR would get the cops called, and I really don't feel like dealing with that even if I am 100% legal.

I do take great delight in carrying an AR and AK, fully loaded, in the gun racks of my truck while going to/from the range.  Legal.  And it upsets sheeple.  ALWAYS a good bet!

I didn't know that.

Have you seen people do it for protection, or is it more, people carrying hunting rifles to and from the range or from hunting?

Unless you display a firearm or other deadly weapon in a public
place in a manner calculated to alarm; you ARE legal in Texas.

I imagine its the later.  I live out in the sticks though.  My husband and I are the only ones I know that aren't ARFCOM members that own ARs.

It's legal in Texas but I'm betting you wouldn't get more than ten feet out the door without someone calling the cops on your ass. And I'm sure they wouldn't listen to your protests that it's quite legal to carry a loaded longarm in public when they either shoot you or arrest you.

Absolutely.  I shoot at least 2-3 coyotes a month.

I have always wondered how far I would get down the interstate or highway with an AR or AK slung across my back while riding a motorcycle ?  I considered this once before embarking on a trip to a friends place to shoot and really wanted to ride my motorcycle but it would be a grey area for sure. Probably would not get far before somebody reported me

Sounds like a recipe for a charge of 'distrubing the peace'.

Being where I live I don't get a whole lot of either concealed or open carry though.

If people started actually carrying their ARs, there would be a spike in orders for superlite uppers!

My carbine, for example, is downright impractical at this point.  Heavy as a sonuvabitch.  Fun to shoot, though

Why in the world would you need that much firepower on you all the time.....my XD-40 is enough for me.

Unless you're planning on getting attacked by a group of zombies.....leave that AR at home

Oh!  Well I guess my confussion answered that questioned.  Nope, no Judy call.  Just the bay of the dogs.

Boy no kidding.  I've thought about packing my M1 carbine just for that reason.  But on the up side of the coin, my arms are in great shape.

There are occassionally cougars and the coyotes will draw the dogs to them. My dogs are worth anywhere from 3k-10,000 dollars.  besides, they're fun to shoot.

I posted about being and "armed escort" for the g/f a while ago,
it sounded like it's perfectly legal, but gets a bit murky regarding in the car...
I think the rifle needs to be unloaded (in OR at least)?

Yeah, but you do see a loaded magazine (or three) hanging off the side from the magwell.  Coming to a state near here before long, I hope, after a few million dead.
