[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Good calipers

Im lookig for some calipers good enough for general gunsmithing...nothing too fancy. Which would yall recomened out of these to get the job done?

Should the cheapest one work even?

I use Brown and Sharpe for dial and Mitutoyo for digital, I use these at least 5 days a week. Not the most expensive, but accurate enough for most uses.

I use Browne & Sharp dial calipers everyday at work. They are good enough for general gun work.

Damn,....I cant get the link to work.

Anyway....the calipers are listed on Harborfreight.com and they are mostly Cen-Tec brand....ranging in price from $5-$60.

I gotta say, I bought a $16 digital caliper from Harbor Freight and I've been impressed with the build quality.

I am using a passed down Mitutoyo Dial Caliper and a fairly new Mitutoyo Digital.. Would recomand them to anyone.. TREETOP mentioned Brown and Sharpe.. I'd recomend them every bit as much.

It is good enough for what I need it to do.

If you are going to buy a set of digital calipers for less than $80 I'd get the harbor frieght ones. Most digital calipers less than $80 are likely made in china specials just like the harbor freights, so why pay more than you have to? If you want better quality(>$80), get something from Mitutoyo, Brown & Sharpe, or Starrett. Check out www.use-enco.com.

Starrett, Mitutoyo, Brown & Sharpe are all good bets

I have an old Brown & Sharpe dial caliper that was made in Switzerland. It's really nice.

Some of the Chicom stuff is ok, some isn't.

Definately good rhe digital,much faster to use.
