Murtha is an idiot. He wants to stop fighting so we can afford to equip our army to fight.
11/18/2005 6:30:22 PM EDT
[#1]
While I disagree with his point of view overall, he is on target about our current ability to continue our acquisition of  the new weapons of war.  Our overall DoD budget is being eaten up at a terrific pace to fund the war.

Instead of buying new ships, planes, weapons and all of the other things our forces will need in the out years, we are buying "stuff" to win this current conflict.

Is that my position?  No.  Is it wrong?  No.  But I think we can and should do both:  Fund the current war and fund the "future" wars as well.  Would it be expensive?  Absolutely.  We can only afford it if the President and Congress decide to make some tough choices and that is damn doubtful with an election coming up.

As one who is painfully close to the DoD (Navy) budget acquisition process, I speak with a certain amount of knowledge of this ugly fact.

It was thus in the late '60s as well.  Our forces were hurt by the huge expenditures for the war then and they are hurting now.

It is a NON-binding resolution for Immediate withdrawl from Iraq. Republicans put it up for a vote to get the Democrats to put up or shut up. But since it is non binding, even if it passes, it doesn't do anything.

I've read three books in the past 2 weeks on experiences in Iraq:

1. Generation Kill - Devil Dogs, Iceman, Captain America and the new face of American War
2. Ambush Alley  - The most extraordinary battle of the Iraq war
3. No True Glory - A frontline account of the battle for fallujah

And I've really come to know the biggest complaint the grunts have in the field. Communications and the competency of their superiors. After reading these books, I seriously have to wonder how we would fair against an army like China? I think our military is in a horrible state. They could barely get through Nasiriyah and it was mostly due to poor communications, indecision and poor decisions by superiors, bad intel, stuck tanks, and the Marines barely made it through in some cases against a rag-tag militia with no comms and no real skills.

ETA: I'm not ragging our boys I'm just questioning the state our military is in when they can barely get tanks running before going in, and just all the red-tape and bullshit the guys on the ground have to deal with to get anything done or get proper equipment. There were several guys that literally stated in the book Ambush Alley that it was a miracle the enemy couldnt organize or shoot worth a shit because their tracks would have had no hope of securing the bridges and getting out alive.

+1. I have been trying to sort this thing out for awhile. OK, you won the MoH for knocking out a Chinese MG nest at the Yalu. That makes you the go-to guy for small-unit tactics. With regard to declaration, conduct, and termination of  war, and matters of military ethics, you have precisely the same authority as my retarded Uncle Booger. He, like you, is 73 years old. Like you, he loves his country. Like you, he doesn't know shit from shinola about international politics.

I think the way to deal with these gasbags (like Murtha, who apparently thinks that his .mil experience gives him the absolute right to have his "sudden withdrawal" resolution handled like a used Depends) is to stand up when they enter the room (as a sign of respect) and thereafter treat them like every other dipshit on two wheels.

Benedict Arnold was a decorated American general of well-proved personal courage, with a known capacity to put the interests of his sovereign above his own interests. Does that mean Washington should have excused (or assisted with) Arnold's proposed capitulation of West Point?

Fuck Murtha. Stuff his medals up his ass, hang a "BEHEAD ME, I'M CHRISTIAN" sign on his back, and let the Marines use him for bait.

Our military is in fine shape. You're basing your opinions on your experience which is what you have read in books. Many posters here are basing their opinions based on their experience which is BTDT.

As far as the leadership thing, read any book about any war from the grunt's eye view. They are always bitching about leadership. Why? Because they don't have all the available information. They are forced into a situation where the blindly follow orders from on high, and when those orders are affecting their very lives a person is going to be a bit skeptical.

As for the logistical stuff, again typical bitches. The reality is not everything is handed to you in perfect working order, and parts do not magically get from one side of the globe to another in an instant. You have to improvise, adapt, overcome.

Every army faces the same thing. There is no military force that works perfectly all the time, and the simple fact is we are better than most.

As for your contention the military is in bad shape, you're basing your opinions on books written about the initial invasion, not as it exists today. The invasion force was deployed very rapidly and without a huge logistical build up as there was in Desert Storm.

In all of those books, the common thread was ability of the American fighting man. Well guess what, he doesn't have that ability walking in off the street. The same system that created that man, is the one you're criticizing. It must be doing something right.

We have difficult work to do in Iraq. We are bringing order to parts of that country that remain dangerous.

The war on terror is not over, yet it is not endless. We do not know the day of final victory, but we have seen the turning of the tide. No act of the terrorists will change our purpose, or weaken our resolve, or alter their fate. Their cause is lost. Free nations will press on to victory.

You should be sorry … either way you have a poor memory or trouble with the truth .

No one in this Administration said there was an Iraqi connection to 9/11. That was NEVER a reason for the war.

Every intelligence agency in the world believed Iraq had WMD and WMD was only one in a long list of reasons for war.

Your're a hoot, numbnuts:

Before 11 September 2001, many in the world believed that Saddam Hussein could be contained. But chemical agents and lethal viruses and shadowy terrorist networks are not easily contained. Imagine those 19 hijackers with other weapons, and other plans - this time armed by Saddam Hussein. It would take just one vial, one canister, one crate slipped into this country to bring a day of horror like none we have ever known. -GW Bush, October, 2002

The terrorists have lost a sponsor in Iraq. And no terrorist networks will ever gain weapons of mass destruction from Saddam Hussein's regime. -GW Bush, January, 2003

We will have struck a major blow right at the heart of the base, if you will, the geographic base of the terrorists who've had us under assault now for many years, but most especially on 9/11. - Dick Cheney, September, 2003

There you go again with the third grade cafeteria crap .

Nothing wrong or incorrect in the above statements.

1. Absolutely spot on… unless you have reading compression problems it makes no connections between Iraq and 9/11 events it only spells out obvious.

2. Again spot on… Iraq was a sponsor of terror and harbored terrorist, including those that had killed Americans.

3. Once again spot on… refer to number 2.

Can you actually compose a thought or is numbnuts all you have learned on the playground.
