Looking to buy a digital game scouting camera for my Dad for an early Christmas.  He has a pipe feeder set up, and is finding some tracks and the feed is being wiped out.  This area has not had any deer population in the last 30 years.  He doesn't get excited about too much, but he is thrilled about these deer on his property.

A quick surf on the subject revealed a couple of reasonably priced units.  Can anyone offer a better digital unit for less than $150?

THANKS!

2.1 Megapixel Guide Gear

OR

1.3 Megapixel Moultrie

Wow!

Where are you?

If you had of asked in 1999 or 2000, I could have wrote you a small book on trail-cams.

Now I just videotape 'em in the back yard all summer.

edit:

check eBay for discontinued models.

A friend of mine bought the GameGear the other day, and I programmed and set it up for him. Even in pitch black darkness it produces extremely clear pictures and seems to do a pretty good job overall. We added a 512 SD memory card and tested it on a moonless night. I was pretty happy with the pictures it took (even in the dark the details of the tactical folder I was carrying were clearly visible) and I only had it set on 1.3 megapixel.

For the money, it is a great camera.

i have bought and used several game cams in the past, all 35 MM. this past summer i built my first. using a P32 or P41 sony cam you can cheaply build a camera that is identical to the penns woods units that are considered the best available. it is WAY easy. i was intimidated at first but have now completed 2. the trigger time is excellent, as are pic quality and ease of setup/use. depending on what you pay for the camera($75-$150 on ebay) you can build a finished unit for around $225 and that is doing it right. all the info you need can be found at www.hagshouse.com . if you are interested IM me and i will help you get started. however, if you need it by Christmas that may be pushing it. parts usually take a few weeks to get. good luck.

if you still want to buy a commercial cam, the 1.3 megapixel cuddeback is now available relatively cheaply, since they have an upgrade version available. it is inferior,IMO, to the homebrews but has an excellent reputaion.

WNC.  Didn't mean to come across as there being no deer in the entire county.  He normally hunts, and kills several each year, about 30 miles down the road.  This is simply the first year of seeing deer sign so close to home.  Only thing we can really attribute it to is the reduction in people actually hunting these days.  Over the past half dozen years we have heard rumors of people seeing deer crossing the roads around here, and have seen them ourselves a little over a mile down the road a few weeks ago.  Been in the same location since '74, and they have never been discovered on his property until recently.  Things are looking up around here.
