| A coworker of mine is going to Mexico next month and I asked him to bring me back a bottle of tequila. Can you recommend a brand of good tequila? I want something that isn't readilly available here. Any suggestions? |

I learned that there are 4 types of tequila. Listed by quality (top down) 1 being the best. 1) Anjeho 2) Respados 3) Gold 4) Blanco 1, 2 are for shooting. 3, 4 are lesser ... There is a bottle called white anjeho in mexico. Get the legal limmit to bring back, some good queso and guac.... make a meal of it. My favorite liquid relaxation. |

There are two types of tequila 100% Blue Agave and Mixto which is around 51% agave and 49% sugar alchohol. Jose Cuervo is an example of mixto. Its shit. You want 100% agave or nothing. I'm not sure they sell the cheap shit in Mexico so you should be ok. The real tequilas break down as follows, blanco(silver), never aged in oak barrels the exception being Herradura which is lightly aged, you can see a slight yellow color in Heradurra. Reposado, aged in oak barrels for a period of time generally between 3 months and a year. Anejo, aged for one year or more in oak barrels. If you want a sipping tequila go with Anejo. It's best enjoyed straight and at room temp although I like to add a lime slice to mine. Some really good Anejo's are Herradura, Cabo Wabo, Don Julio and Chinaco. Patron makes a good Anejo as well but dont let the fancy advertising in Maxim fool you into thinking its the best. Reposado, these tequilas make really good margaritas. My absolute favorite tequila for my margaritas is Herradurra reposado. Very good. My wife brings me this from Juarez when she visits her family in El Paso and pays about $22 per bottle. It runs about $45 here in ABQ. Once again some good reposados are the Cabo Wabo, the Patron and the Chinaco. Silver Tequilas, I use the Cabo and Patron when making my watermelon margaritas and they are damn good. What I would do is tell your friend how many bottles you want and have him bring you and assortment of various brands. As long as you are following the 100% Agave guidelines you will be ok. Hope this helps. |

Get something that is hard or impossible to find in the states. I suggest Caballo Negro Reposado. This is sipping quality and almost never imported to the US. The only problem is that it is not easy to find in Mexico. Your friend needs to shop around a little to find this one. |
