Anybody wasted thier $$$ on this flick yet? I haven't been to the theater since Forest Gump, but me & the wife decided to go see "Jarhead" this evening. I didn't like the book, but I figured I would give the movie version a shot. What a waste of time & cash. What a shitbird? Old dude would have been kicked out of my units. And I sure a hell wouldn't have spoken to my SNCO's like they portrayed in the movie. I guess my biggest problem is John Q public might get the impression that all Marines are the like those portrayed in the movie, and the the professionals were really are. Got to give Jamie Foxx credit, he did do a pretty good job as a SSGT. LMK what ya'll think! Semper FI |
I understand that is exactly what this movie is supposed to do -- smear the Marines It is after all still Hollywood. And while they cant do it outright or as public as they used to the actors and producers/directors disdain for the American fighting man is plain as day--there area few notable exceptions of course but by and large they dont hesitate to piss all over our armed forces at the every chance they get. |

But it has some cool sounding music in the commercials. Tears of the sun. ![]() I was in the Corps when Heartbreak Ridge was coming out. It was supposed to premier in Ocean Side Ca & the powers that be were going to donate $50,000 to the servicemens YMCA in OceanSide. After previewing the movie, the Corps decided to pull it's support, as they felt it put a bad light on the Corps, so it premiered somewhere else. I still watch it once in awhile. I know it wasn't accurate when they showed Recon as a group of sh!tbirds. |
They showed 'Marines' from 2nd Mar Div in Cali, that should be enough to pull support ![]() And like Recon ever marched infront of Majors on a grass field ![]() Model A Ford and a tank full of gas..... |

just saw it, and althouigh i could not say that i liked it, somthing was just off about the movie, there were hints of truth in the story but for the most part it just seemd odd, half the movie i felt let just smaking the piss out of him, telling him to suck it up, form my expierience with 2/7 STA I am still trying to figure out what the hell welcom to the suck means, oh and also they were way off on thier indoc but none the less Jammie Fox did a great job, |

Hmmmmmm.... I wonder why it got between 3 1/2 and 4 stars in all the reviews then? Perhaps it's the "been there done that" crowd here that know better? The uniforms were wrong. That's not the way "We" did it in the Corps. It's a damn movie for God's sake I'm still going to see it at the matinee tomorrow afternoon and make up my own mind. |
Not in the hyperliberal Boston Globe- they really panned it in today's newspaper, saying it was unrealistic and came off as a leftwing propaganda piece . In other words, the moviemakers weren't subtle enough in their anti-military diatribe.......

I liked the movie, even if it was a cock-tease (if you've seen it you know what I mean). I'm just a an Army ROTC cadet so I don't know sh!t about the Corps, but it was obviously lacking respect of ranking individuals and so on. I gotta admit, parts of it were hilarious!!! I'd recommend the movie... |
2ndMarDiv in Cali huh? They should have paid for some better technical advisors. |
| Flame me if you will.......The wife and I enjoyed it and put it on our must buy DVD list. It was entertaining. Both of us are Veterans, me a two time combat Veteran. Not real in all aspects of course but worth the $8.50 in my book. Also it wasn't too anti war, I was surprised. |
It's just a slang term for the Marine Corps. It's used (or was used, I don't know if it's still common)when your life in the Corps is sucking or when you are recalling bad times in the Corps. We often referred to the Corps as "The Suck". Life in the USMC, in spite of the "every day is a holiday, every meal is a feast" B.S., is just like life anywhere else. It's has it's up's and down's. The Corps sometimes promises big and delivers very little. Other times it promises nothing and gives you the world. Example; When your are laying on a beach under a coconut palm with an ice cold San Miguel in one hand and an LBFM in the other, it's "1,2,3,4 I love the Marine Corps". When your are in a fighting hole in Korea in February at 0300, it's "fuck the suck". |
| I just saw it. Thought it was good. Just finished serving four in July. I guess maybe I was in a whole different military, that or Im dilusional or...others are dilusional. To me it accurately portrayed the mental aspects. It might not be the majority, but it exists. I do notice that it seems that the opinions on the movie (by veterans) are dependent on the length of service of the reviewer and their overall experience. I'm out for a reason, it's not the same military my father served in. But, I'm not down playing those who are going to serve or are serving. I made the choice, so have/will many others. (please don't flame me just because you were one of those guys that cared more about looking good to the uppers than their own) |
| Not therapuetic in any sense...just validation I guess...some of the shit I've felt since Grenada and DS/DS all makes sense...I enjoyed the movie...pretty accurate portrayal I thought...Swoffard was just a little more introspective than most...yes he's a little antiwar...probably feeling cheated he didnt get his...Poll 100 Marines about the Suck adn its 1,2,3,4 I love the marine Corps when things were good but when things were a F*&ked up it was the SUCK... I enjoyed the movie... |

The movie was pretty damn good. Not FJM or Platoon great, but it is very well made and directed. If you cannot say the movie touched you, provoked thought, or stunned you, you must be a hollow soul. Most just follow the ARF.com crowd and go into the movie with the 'I am going to hate it no matter what attitude', or will find one part they hate, or one message they disagree with and report that the movie 'sucked ass'. I must be the only one of the board who enjoyed the book, and the movie was very thought provoking and entertaining. I will be buying DVD. Thats all. ![]() |
I dunno, that's just what he told me. "There was no fighting in it." |
I wont go to the movie or buy the DVD because that POS shitbird Swofford would benefit; but I would buy the DVD at a flea market and take it to the range and use it as a target. |
There was no ground combat in it. And all the "M16's" were really AR-15's (if you pay close attention.) |
Because it follows/is about that dirtbag Swofford.. and Swofford did not see combat. I thought the movie sucked. The part that 'touched' me the most was when the dude saw his wife on the tape she sent him. Waste of my money. |
I wanted to see the guns, and ignore all that talking crap, but there were no guns. I didn't read the book, so I wanted to know what it was all about.

I know it wasn't accurate when they showed Recon as a group of sh!tbirds.
