If you had a Mauser in, say, .308, and it had a 100 yard bbl, would the bullet reach the end of the bbl and exit when fired? If so, what about a 10,000 yard bbl? |

Ok, what if... You had a 12 foot radius tunnel drilled directly through the center of the earth. It is a direct, straight shot through the center. This tunnel is insulated from all heat and pressure and stays at a comfortable 75 degrees at every point inside it. The walls are also generously padded. What would happen if you jumped down it feet first? |
You'd be crushed as the gravity increase, as I recall. They just showed this on Discovery. |
no. There isn't enough gas produced to push the bullet out the end. Ok I really want to figure this out. does anyone know how many moles of gas is produced from the burning of a stanturd .308 load |
I think it would, it would keep oscillating back and forth through the center, eventually coming to a stop, much like a pendulum. |
Right, it would yo-yo to a stop in the center, when it lost all its momentum. |
got any face paint? Have you ever fell in acid? Have you ever looked at a single-engine cessna flying by and thought "hold my beer and watch this"? If so, this project might be for you. Just look out for crazy anghst-ridden psychos in spandex. They might supply the cessna, but in the end they will take your fun away. |
That was my conclusion when I first thought about this about 10 years ago. Gravity is a force of attraction between objects having mass. If you somehow got to the center of the earth, the mass of the earth would be all around you, pulling you in all directions at once with a force somewhat less than gravity on the surface. |
