I have an open bottle of Scotch. It's been open for a long long time. My question is how long does does it stay good for? The problem is the cap doesn't stay screwed on.

Only one way to find out!

It should be OK for quite a while, though I am not a scotch expert, 40 proof or more will keep for years.

Define "long time." To me, if the bottle is open and still contains the precious nectar for more than a couple of hours, you're not drinking fast enough.

It's probably fine.  I doubt anything could grow in a solution of 40% alcohol.

Not quite sure if your kidding about the cap but liquor will keep for years and years after breaking the seal with the cap on. With no cap I would think the alcohol would evaporate and leave something behind. I have a bottle of Tortuga Rum that I only pour when a certain friend is in town. We have been working on that bottle for 9 years!

As stated before, only one way to find out!

the major problem you would have with the screw cap not fitting properly would be evaporation, since it's been open for a year and a half i don't think it's a problem.

I always get quality booze that uses real corks. I recork immediatly after pouring so it doesn't get a chance to evaporate.

After I started this post I thought about that. Not sure why I didn't think of that in the first place after opening the bottle. As for the cap not staying on. Here's what I mean. When I screw the cap back on it just keeps twisting on the top of the bottle as if its not catching.
