First off, my apologies to individuals in this forum that may be employed in social work or related fields.  This rant is focused on several social workers I know personally, and are not inclined to visit this forum.

Spent a weekend this summer at a retreat, based on a twelve step program.  As you probably know, the objective of all twelve step programs is to combat the effects of addictions.  Addictions like food, alcohol and drugs are the most common varieties.  Twelve step groups are designed to help addicts and those impacted by addictive behaviors.   I find these programs helpful but several of the people that regularly attend can really piss me off.

Our twelve step group organized a weekend getaway.  This group included individuals who are employed as skilled labor, social workers, housewives, teachers and a few managerial/professional types.  Out of all the professions represented at these retreats, social workers seem to be the most prevalent.  It remains unclear why this mode exists.

The social workers in our group are characteristically the most liberal bunch of bottom-feeders I have ever had the misfortune to experience.  I am unaware of the educational curriculum college students must complete to become social workers but, it must make professions like teaching or journalism look like military school.  Apparently, what attracts a person to the profession of social work is the same liberal desire to orchestrate other people’s lives even though the social workers themselves cannot balance their own checkbooks.  The inevitable non-sequiturs in their liberal logic have always been supplanted by their unbounded arrogance.  Critical thinking is a technique social workers employ only when debating whether Stalin or Mao would make a better world president.

Some liberal rhetoric I was exposed to during this weekend is enough to make a founding father spin in his grave:  the constitution needs to be rewritten to guarantee everyone free healthcare, education, food, housing and shelter.  Every entitlement must be guaranteed except for individual thought.  Other liberal social worker opinions include: global warming is an exclusive result of American industrialization and greed.  The United States is an evil military-industrial empire bent on global subjugation.  Sexual preference is simply a choice with no social or moral implications.  Karl Marx is a benevolent genius while Carl Rove is the devil incarnate.  And of course, privately owned firearms are an anachronism.

Just the concepts of self-determination, individualism and personal responsibility are repugnant to most of these liberal turds.  After all, when indigent people have social workers tell them what to do, and which government welfare benefits to apply for, why do these people need to think or do anything for themselves?

To be fair, I am employed in an engineering discipline.  My education includes architecture, engineering, business and law.  Therefore, I am inclined to analyze social and political situations in a secular and pragmatic environment.  So I may be restricted in appreciating the liberal social work mindset, assuming there is one.

One small ray of hope from that weekend: one lady (not social worker) mentioned to me she purchased a revolver for protection when a police officer recommended it.  I told her that I carry a concealed handgun on a regular basis; she asked me if I was scared to carry a gun?  I replied: “What do I need to be scared of?  I carry a gun.”

So….after this rant, what professions do you feel rank as the most liberal / nauseating?

+1 with the social worker stuff.  I used to "see" this one girl who was getting her masters in social work.  100% liberal nutball.

I myself am involved in buying and cutting timber so I guess my job  would be the most nauseating for liberals.

A date of mine who was in school to become a psychologist. She was so dysfunctional that I found it hard to understand exactly how she managed to tie her shoes properly. When she had something she wanted to say, she'd use these words: "You know, some people might not like that" or a variant of that. She could not say that she didn't like something. It was always some mysterious, nebulous some people.

Coffe shops and book stores always have more than their share.  College campuses are the worst still.

My sister's a social worker for underprivilages kids.  But she's not one of the bad ones. She's just completely apolitical. She doesn't think right or left - she just wants to do her thing and go home.

I also have a friend who's a social worker. She's about as conservative as they come. And the local school system where I lived has all sorts of teachers who are gun owners and avid shooters who are also very conservative.

I guess it depends more on where people of those occupations live and how they were raised, rather than what field they work in.

She was nuts.  She was dating you.

I think I see a pattern.

And scientists...at least most of the ones I know.  The only scientists I know that have a good grip of reality are ones that had a parent in the military or were planning on going into the military themselves.  Out of the huge building I work in (mostly scientists), there's only one that I know that has the same ideas that I do about politics and the like.

Looking at it from a different angle...what about France?  That is about the most liberal country around and it has been occupied more times than a lone porta john at a chili eating contest.
