Well my personal philosophy on this: I own a black pair of shoes, burgundy shoes, and brown shoes... I wear the black pair of shoes ONLY with dark slacks (blues, black or grey) and then the socks match somewhere in the same family. If wearing blue slacks and black shoes, I wear either dark blue or black socks or socks with a design in them that are predominately black or blue anyway. If I wear tans, khaki (green or tan shade), green, or brown slacks, I wear the brown shoes...with socks the same way as above (predominately brown or colorful mixed types.) Belts for brown should be a dark brown or burgundy perhaps. Black belt for dark slacks. The burgundy shoes may substitute ONLY for the black shoes, to break up the dark color thing. And how did I come to know all this....several years of my wife laying out my clothes for me...otherwise I wore whatever was clean to work (and it often didn't match). And in no case should you be like the foreign raised citizens around here and wear WHITE socks with dress clothes. Pleeeeez. |
I vote match the pants in the case of slacks.... jeans need white socks IMO |

Socks match the pants. Always, and as close to the shade as you can get. Except I'm not sure for white pants (as in, a pure white linen suit). Shoes match the belt and watch band, unless your watch uses a bracelet instead of a band, in which case the bracelet matches the watch body, belt buckle, and ideally your wedding ring. |

I usually wear brown shoes, which actually range in color from basic brown to oxblood to tan. I will typically select the sock to go with whatever color of shirt I'm wearing, but much darker. The variation is if I'm wearing green slacks, then I usually wear green socks. If I'm wearing black shoes, I wear black socks. In typical office garb, I only wear black shoes with black or grey slacks, and that's pretty rare. I really prefer tan or green (olive) slacks. I have one pair of dark blue slaks that I wear infrequently. If I'm going to the beach, I wear black socks up to my knees! They look great with my Bermuda shorts!

I also only wear boots. Noboidy ever see's my socks. I grab the first two I come two. Sometimes I try to get lengths that are similiar. It can be odd if one is real long and one is real short. The only exception would be funerals. I have 1 black suit, 1 black pair of dress shoes, and one black pair of dress socks. That is what I wear for that. Dan |

There is no thinking about it. SOCKS SHOULD MATCH PANTS Match doesn't really mean match, just that it should be closer in color to the pants than the shoes. That way when you sit down the color of the pant leg continues all the way to the shoe. That way the leg looks longer and the outline of the shoe is still clear. If the shoes match the socks, you end up with an undefined black blob at the bottom of your trousers. The major color in argyle should match the pants, or match neither. The exception is if you want the socks to match your tie or shirt or something. Like in the summer you might wear khaki pants and a yellow shirt with yellow socks. But this is casual wear, not business wear. Or loafers and no socks! Or if you just wear white athletic socks all the time, which is fine if you're an athlete all the time or want to look like Steve Urkle |
Arighty... One of the gay guys is wearing white socks with red pants and shoes. Tan shirt... No match there. Looks like the gay guys shouldn't be listened to. Kent |
+1. Match also means darker color than your pants. If your socks are lighter color than your pants, that draws the eye naturally to your socks. Not what you want to do. |
My dress shoes are boots. They go well with my formal (ironed) bluejeans. |
