Two questions:

What's the background on the photo of the skull?

And...

What 7.62 NATO battle rifle do folks like best in Alaska.... FAL, HK, M1A/M14 ?

I was in class with a guy from Barrow and he told a story about a guy shooting a polar bear with a HK91.  They had to finish it off with 12 ga buckshot.

When I was a young fuzzy-cheeked CFII, I always wanted to go to AK and fly for a couple of summers. But then I got married and needed to stay down here in TX and do the corporate/EMS flying career track.

I'm making an OK living but I will always wonder what I missed-out on. Looks like a lot of fun!

Fly safe,

Flyer

Here's one of my favorite pics from my AK trip.  I went up in July to get my float rating.

Here's me after the checkride(in the cool overhauls . . . )

All I can say is WOW, I'm jealous.  Flying in AK was the most fun I've ever had, and float flying in a J3 cub was awesome too.  I hope to move there someday and mostly fly for myself.  I don't think I could afford the commercial insurance . . .  :(

Mmmm, the lure of the great white north.

Lets see, I'm single, have no attachments, and looking for new work.  Wonder what there is to do up there.

Sorry, no crab fishing for me.

Is the man in the photo featuring the remains of the ?Winchester?, human, and bear named Harold Johnson?  He had a trading post and was a gunsmith I believe.

Looks awsome. I've always wanted to go to Alaska.

So, other than being dark for half the year, are there any other disadvantages to living up there? For instance, are property taxes bad?

I think you get paid to live there - Alaska permanent fund - or something.

Thanks for the pics.

Waiting for update on the skull pic.

So tell me people, what would be the reasons to live year around in Alaska or not to live there at all.

I have had a few job offers up there in the Fairbanks area and have seriously pondered them being young and single but i'm just not quite sure about the 6 months of dark and dreery cold as hell winters.

So tell me, is it worth it, is it someting you get used to, and is it an adventure to undertake for a few years or not worth it.

I have really pondered it and know i would love the hunting and fishing etc but ponder the 6 mos of light and 6 months of dark winter.

So whats the honest thoughts on this.

OH AND WHATS UP WITH THE PICTURE OF THE GUY AND THE SKULL.

It is not totally dark for 6 months. There is a little light for part of the day. If  you are single I'd say go for it. That's where I would be if I were. YOu can make some serious money there. Most people there aren't the most educated.
