Get a company or someone professional to do this. I really don't think it is worth risking federal "pound me in the ass" prison to do it yourself based upon information gained off the internet. The BATFE will prosecute you for this. If Randy Weaver were alive, he could tell you all about it.

IAAL, and I've worked with BATFE in the past. You are correct. They close the action, run a dowel down the barrel till it hits the breech/bolt face, mark it at the muzzle, & measure to the mark. For O/A length, they stand the gun stright up against a wall (usually in a corner), mark the muzzle on the wall, & measure from the floor to the mark. Whatever else you want to say about them they don't play any goofy games with length issues. |
| I don't need a professional to hack a shotgun barrel off. If it is measured from the breach face or measured from the inside with the bolt closed that is no problem. I just wanted to make sure the measurement is not taken from the end of a chambered shell. I would make it at least 1" long to make sure I didn't fudge it up anyways. |
Thanks. I'm going to be honest now that I know I am legal. I have a shotty I was worried about but it is definately 19.5" measuring from the bolt face. Someone asked me how long the barrel was and I was measuring it from the end of a shell and it scared me there for a sec. I guess I can go put my ad back up  .
