Sorry I crapped on macman37's thread. I'm just tired of sports teams making so much money. Maybe I'm just jealous. Sports teams and hollywood actors. I can't think of any other groups of people who are less deserving of a big paycheck. |
Hockey is not a sport it is three events put into one: 1. Playing with the puck with a stick 2. Skating 3. Beating the crap out of each other The activity would be much more streamlined if they would just do each of these in order and then get out. |
|
First up this is just in defense of hockey... Please don't take this as a "crap" in your thread. They are overpaid - I totally agree with that. All professional athletes are. However, I see hockey players doing a LOT of unpaid, unadvertised good for the community. They visit sick kids in the hospital all the time and I have seen them cry when a child with cancer dies and I've seen them close doors to keep media out when visiting a sick child. In other sports they talk about "respect" and the only time they cry is if they've been traded or something like that. I have seen 6'5" musclebound athletes crying their eyes out on TV when interviewed about a little girl the team had befriended that died of cancer. Hockey's a great sport on the rink. The best IMHO (YMMV). But it's off the ice that a lot of these guys really show their mettle. There are some head cases in this sport as in all sports- but in terms of pure, humanitarian nice-guy-ness, hockey players take the cake. |
Sports teams make money by selling tickets, merchandise, advertizing. They charge what the market will bear and make the amount of money that the market allows. I'm tired about people complaining about other people making a lot of money. |
Ice Castles? The only people that don't like Hockey are the ones that are to SPASTIC to skate. You guys probably like baseball Now thats a sport......not
|
Thats it! I knew it had "Cutting" in the title but I could not remember. The chic was not bad in that movie. |
I'd do 'er. |
Of all the professional sports where players make too much money, hockey is at (or at least closer to) the bottom of the list. But I agree, let's take all the money that the people in hollywood and big sports stars make, and give it to soldiers and teachers. |
You misunderstand the nature of compensation. Compensation comes out of the ability to generate revenue. It IS NOT a measure of the importance of the job done. |
Yeah, socialism is a great idea....
|
No, I'm pretty sure I know how compensation works. My point was who DESERVES more. |
Jesse Ventura was on CNBC last night giving opinions on sports salaries and such. (I respect him, and I'd vote for him if he ran for President) It was interesting how he seemed to bash the sports society because most stadiums are partially funded, and/or given huge tax breaks, at the expense of the hard working man, while the players are getting rich. Money out of my pocket whether I want to pitch in or not. Anyway, If you want to pay big bucks to watch a hockey game, and directly influence a rich guy getting richer, that is your choice. I'm not going to put YOU down for it. But I'm definitely going to call a player or team a big bunch of pussies when they cry about not getting paid enough. |
Yeah, that's socialism
|
Redistribution of wealth. There's one major pillar. |
+100000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 |
Yes, it certainly is. However not all redistribution of wealth is socialism. Not all whales are dolphins, but all dolphins are whales. |
So you'd be for your money being given to soldiers and teachers as well then, right? I mean why should you be exempt when sports stars and actors are not? |
Ignore the whole money redistribution thing, what two occupations do the most good for society and it's people as a whole and do not currently receive as much compensation as they deserve. Teachers and soldiers. (and my money does go to teachers and soldiers, because I pay taxes, however I don't think there compensation is just, at the same time, I think professional sports stars and actors get paid too much.) |
| Hockey needs to go back to the good ole days, before the NHL tried to market it as family entertainment. They took away a lot of the fighting and replaced it with European players with face shields and cheap shots. And before someone says there is still a lot of fighting in Hockey now, you probably didn't watch much before the Russian 5 and all the other European players came over... |
The ABILITY to pay a salary comes out of the revenue generated by that individual. "Deserves" is irrelevant. Your point was based in socialism - FROM each according to his ability TO each according to his need (or what he "deserves." |
Then lobby for them to be paid more. Why just take from someone else? I agree with the fact that teachers and soldiers provide a valuable service, however. |
Ahem, is the revenue generated so high because of the work done or because of the compensation received? Or, if these people didn't get paid so much would tickets to sporting events and movies have to be so high? |
|
It's real simple. If you have a problem with professional sports... like the player's salaries... stop supporting them. Stop watching ESPN. Stop buying Sporting News and Sports Illustrated Stop watching games. Stop buying branded merchandise. Stop going to see the games live. Spend the time with your family. Read a book and learn something. Enjoy all that extra time and saved money. |
Its the free market. People WILLINGLY pay it. No one is forcing them. Your questions are senseless and irrelevant. |
+1 (but its more fun to whine about it, like a six year old) |
Holy shit, get your head out of your ass, do I have the power to take money away from Michael Jordan and Tom Cruise and give it to a soldier and a teacher? No I don't. Does Tom Cruise need another million dollars? I don't know, but he already has quite a few million and I'm sure a million here and a million there won't upset his lifestyle too much. However there are soldiers families that can't afford a car to take the kids to the doctor because the military doesn't pay enough. You profess to be a moral man. Do you think thats right? |
I just really wanted to quote this. I mostly agree with roboman. Yes, sports starts and movie stars get to much and teachers and soldiers don't get enought, but the government taking from one and giving to the others is...well...as roboman first said. |
Do you know ANYTHING about economics? Or are you just talking out of your ass for the sake of looking like an idiot. The price for sporting events and movies is obvious not so high, because people are paying these prices and supporting the players and owners. The market is bearing what the price is. If the price were too high, no one would be buying tickets, thus leaving owners and players broke. It's called supply and demand. Take ECN 101 and you'll be more familiar with it
|
Did they, or did they not agree to be paid the salary they now receive? I'll leave it to THEIR discretion as to whther they should abide by their commitments. I'd LIKE to see them get paid more, but they agreed to the pay they get, and can remedy any perceived inequities by advancing their rank, or NOT re-upping. THAT is how MY world works, and THEIR world works. Its called the "real world." |
I believe it's a sport and therefore should be discussed in the forum decidated to sports bashing and smack talking. Sports Talk Smack, News, & More! Putting a topic in the appropriate forum is a persons way of saying "Good job Goatboy... thanks for keeping this separate from the wild free-for-all known as the GD." |

I like Hockey, played when I was in school. Fun game to play and watch and the sport itself isn't hyped as bad as others (like Football); nor do the players get paid as much as other popular sports (Basketball, Baseball, etc.;). The Stupidbowl is one of the most hyped events in the sports world. I find Football to be the most BORING to watch. Then comes Golf, Basketball, Baseball, NASCAR, etc.; in no special order. Golf is not only overrated, it is also very boring to play and watch. Golf was once a game for old timers that couldn't get around much, now all of the yuppies with their polo t's and dockers took over. |

Aren't most of these players from Canada and don't they live under a pretty socialist econimic system, so couldn't you say they are already taking a large chunk of there income and redisbursing it. People in general are paid based on skills, experience and how much return thoose skills can generate, also how much demand and supply there are for those skills in the market. There are hundreds of thousands, probably millions, of people who qualify to be Public teacher and more that qualify to be a grunt in the military, that is why there compensation level is what it is. It is also why highly skilled Doctors ect. get paid what they do. However pay and bennefits tend to rise as your experience and skills do, this is becasue there are now fewer people in the employment field how can do what you do. This dosen't have anything to do with the honor of serving your country or community and both are honorable and consider that honor part of your compensation and you will be much happier. |
Suck it up and keep practicing, you won't be a loser forever. ETA: Hockey rules. |
Now thats a sport......not
