I believe he was a high level serious baddie with the Alliance, as in he probably tortured Browncoats, etc, before having a huge change of heart. In the two-hour pilot, he instinctively delivers a throat strike to the armed bad guy. They don't teach that kind of thing to just anybody. |
Or instead of skipping around it someone can just spell it out. Whatever. |
That was a question for the next season.  Book is a pretty interesting character.
He is recognized by the Alliance, and he knows how to handle weapons. Not your average monk. |

She was a farmgirl. Book was some some sort of high placed Operative. In "Out of Gas" when River "reads" Book he's says a rather cold and remorseless line. |
