This should be easy:

I have a laptop computer (win 98) sitting here on my desk.

I want to know what processor it has (PII, but WHAT SPEED?), without shutting it down to see the speed displayed on startup.

Where within the machine do I look for this info?

Google a program that'll do it. They are out there.

Thanks, guys.

I don't have an internet connection, so I can't download anything on these machines.

Anyway, I've got two old Win98 laptops, and I need to press one into service. I'm gonna go w/ the one that has the most RAM.

(96 vs. 64......)

So download it onto the machine you're currently working on then copy it to a floppy or CD for installion on the laptops...

The System Firmware should tell most (if not all).

That involves setting up an internet connection.

These are win98 machines, with only 56k modems.

I'll dig through the spare parts bin for an old pcm/cia adapter........

No…

What he meant was your current Internet connection.

How are you posting this without a Internet connection.

I'm surfing on *my* machine - an XP laptop with a 3.06Ghz P4.

The others are just spares, and I needed one of them for a very specific task.

Anyway, long story short, I found an adapter, got an internet connection working on the machine that (of the 2) had the most RAM, and it is now off and running. Didn't have time to check the speed via the internet.

Thanks anyway, though.

<---had forgotten how archaic Win98 was.......

Format the hard drive and install an operating system that isn't a virus in a box.

WinXP or one of the many flavors of Linux should do nicely.
