Being lazy, and cheap, because in day to day ordinary work and play, I don't need a machete.  (IF I was going into known dangerous areas, I wouldn't take a knife to a gunfight) I carry a nice little S&W twin blade, one is smooth the other is serrated.  This way  both blades are really long enough and the whole thing isn't too big.  Too many combo blades the serrated portions isn't long enough.

Ain't the worlds best, but it stays sharp enough with a little help.  It's a tool not a weapon,  But it  could be damn nasty with both blades out if necessary.

I perfer a plain edge on my normal carry knife.

If you have to do fine work a serrated is hard to work with.

Somtimes I just have a compulsion to wittle stuff.
