It's not military. It's not USCG. It's a private helo. The USCG were sent in to rescue the crew.

CNN just said they have confirmation it was a CG chopper doing a regular flight, not evac.  That would explain 2 crew members.

AFAIK, Uncle sugar's helos will always have at least 3 crewmen aboard, with the exception of 2-seaters. That's one reason I was never afraid of riding in a miltary aircraft; the crewchief rides too, and he has a personal stake in how well maintained it is.

Good point.  The only time I've seen only 2 coasties in a chopper, they were riders in an Air Logistics chopper coming to do inspections.

Looks kinda like a Puma or Cougar.

I think you may be right.  i haven't rode either of those in a while.  It does remind me of a Super Puma that I'm more familiar with so I'd say regular Puma, maybe.  The color still has me wondering though.  Maybe just got out of Earl Scheib's?

Better shot of the undercarriage

ETA: Wrecked helo

ETA: Cougar. Nacells for the landing gear look more correct.

My speculation: Looks like the kind of bird the oil companies use to get to their drilling rigs.  Way too large to be a newsie or an air ambulance.

ETA - Looks like the one in qualityhardware's post above is doing just that.

When you look at the close ups of the chopper, it has a civilian registration number, starts with an N.

MSNBC is reporting that the aircraft belonged to a civilian Army contractor:

Appears from the nose that it is the Cougar, from the pics you posted.

Blackwater USA sent a Puma down there to help out. I doubt Blackwater would paint one of their aircraft orange though.

Been searching for a photo clear enough to read the FAA registration number, haven't found any yet.

Anyone else?

I'm sure just a normal crash due to mechanical failure.

I just heard MSNBC referencing helicopter shot down.  They have guns, not stinger missiles and RPGs in NOLA.

But I thought the expiration of the AWB now allowed RPGs to be sold through the ice cream trucks?

Oh, but remember that movie where they....

On another note, how many glocks & gats does it take to drop a helo?

Bush personally shot it down with an RPG that Dick Cheney sold to him from the back of a Haliburton ice cream truck.

The crashed helo is a Puma of some sort.

Blackwater's Puma is white, at least the one I saw was.

I saw it a Baton Rouge a couple days ago.

I've been down there helping with the medical evacuation.

They are saying now it was an animal rescue helicopter.

Yes, lets use a currently limited resource, helicopter, to rescue animals instead of people.
