Just re-watched Platoon again, and noticed the scene where Red lights Barnes cigarette after the fight between Barnes and Elias.  He fumbles it first, but then the second time gets the Zippo to light.  How do you do that?

Any other cool tricks?

And yeah, I know, it's like Dick Tracy'ing a revolver.

The only tricks I know are lighting it by snapping my fingers and lighting it on my leg...

Sometimes you have to move the Zippo around, to get the vapors out of the well, so it will light.  You can do it buy flicking it open and shut again or moving it in an up motion before lighting.

But how exactly do you do the snap your fingers and open the lighter thing?

If you hold it with your first and middle finger on the lid, and your thumb on the bottom, then kind of squeeze them together real quick. Your top 2 fingers slip off the lid and it pops open.

I do it the same way.  When your top fingers slip off, you should end up with the lighter grasped between those two fingers and your thumb.

You can also do this with the lighter upside down.

If you're really good you can do it and the lighter will be lit when it pops open.

Does not matter, can be done either way.

I can only do the leg one, which isn't that fascinating.

Hold the lighter sideways in your hand. When your finger slip off the lid they should slide doen the side of the lighter, not across the hinge

The hinge should be as far away from your fingers as possible (doesn't matter which direction.)

Kind of a leverage thing.

When you flip your wrist to slam the cylinder closed on a revolver, it tends to spring the crane.

After using the above trick, you snap your fingers so that your middle finger hits the wheel and lites the Zippo.

Right now, my best Zippo trick would be finding mine. I seem to have 'misplaced' it a few days back...

It works best for me when the hinge is pointing towards the pinky and ring finger
