A guy I went to High School with, who's married to a girl who went there too, just accidentally ran over their three year old son.  Their only child.
In their driveway.
He's dead.

Fuck.

What's even sadder is that there's a name for this type of accident: "Baby Bye Bye Syndrome".

Happened last summer in the next town over.  Parent in a big rush to leave the house, kid just learning to walk and get into trouble, next thing you know the toddler is following the parent out to the driveway and nobody notices it.

ok I know im gonna get it for this but here goes.

Your friend is a fucking idiot who shouldnt even be allowed to reproduce. Running over a puppy or a kitten is one thing but a child, THEIR child is just plain idiotic, I have heard of parent inattentiveness but this takes the cake.

You are supposed to keep an eye on your kids at ALL times and keep them out of the way so crap like this doesn't happen. It is incredibly sad that people just dont pay attention, all it takes is a few seconds. [flamesuit on]

It was an accident.  The parent had left a grandparent in charge of the toddler but he didn't notice the kid was outside until he looked out the window and saw the mother backing over the kid.  In this case, the child survived with injuries.

What happened to your friend was a freak accident.  Kids are programmed to follow their parents.

If your local media is anything like mine, they'll be repeating this syndrome's name over and over again until you vomit.

You must be one of those infallible types I hear about once in a while.

Show some goddamn compassion, something awful happened in Cincinnatus' hometown.  Good grief.

Oh God, please comfort the little one who is now in your arms. Please give him only happy thoughts about his mommy and daddy, and please, please, grant grace to his parents at this time...and forever.

As a father of two young girls and a baby boy (ages 4, 2, and 6 months), I know how quickly they can expose themselves to danger. Mere seconds.

Oh God, send the little boy's angel to his parents to curb their grief.

Another non-parent spewing forth their wisdom, I'll bet.  Anyone who has raised a normal, healthy toddler in a normal, healthy household would realize just how easily a tragedy like this could happen.  Read Wobblin-Goblin's post - it's true.

God bless your friends, Cincinnatus.

Horrible.

This case shows you why it is such a good idea to get a car that has those rear bumper sensors. They really WORK! Last month I was backing out of my driveway and the cat from next door darts behind me. The sensors started to beep instantly as soon as the cat got behind the car, and I was able to stop right then. If the sensors could detect a housecat, a small child would show up. Now, its not a 100% sure thing, but it is better than nothing, as in some vehicles(especially the big SUV's and trucks), you simply cannot see a small child or animal when it is behind the vehicle and you would have no idea they were there. I have seen many times some soccer-mom and her out of control little kid in a store parking lot, and the kid darts of and runs down the parking lanes. If someone was just starting to back out as the kid runs by, the little kid would not be seen by the driver and the kid becomes roadkill...it could happen to any of us the next time we go shopping, and rear parking sensors could help save the kids life, not to mention keeping us from backing into other cars/poles etc.

I cannot tell you how sorry I am for them however

maybe the first post was a little harsh and not in good taste, but my opinion doesnt change. And details dont mean shit. Remember those idiots that accidently shot their kid on IIRC memorial day? Well he was wearin cammies and was behind the target but theyre still idiots. And while I have not raised any kids I have spent many an hour baby sitting kids of all ages and while tough keeping your eyes on the kids and keeping them alive is possible.

Look if I accidently shoot one of my family members while cleaning my gun I dont expect anyone to say "awwww, its ok pookie, it wasnt YOUR fault YOU didn't do anything at all" No im gonna expect every one of you to chew me out for being an idiot, details?, details dont mean jack shit.

Don't let WolfAR15 paint a bad picture for non-parents or teenagers. As a recently-turned 20-year-old and a non-parent, I'm terribly saddened to hear of this. I can't imagine the feeling those parents must be having and cannot begin to fathom how much pain they much be in. I hope they stay strong, and may the young one rest in peace.

We're raising our grandkids.  Whenever we are leaving in a vehicle and they are outside playing, we don't move the vehicle unless we can see them.  We normally order them to a "safe" place well out of the path of the car or truck.  If they aren't in sight, we don't move.

If you are even just a "casual acquaintence" it would be a great idea for you to become a friend of these folks if you have any compassion for them.  These things just happen.  My father was run over as a child by his mother back in the early fifties....my father was lucky in a sense that he survived but he has had many problems over the years that stem from the incident.  Little kid, wrong place, wrong time.  When I was about ten I got to watch a neighboor kid down the street get run over by a pickup truck as the kid bolted into the street from between two cars.  Absolutley NOT the fault of the driver.....sadly, the driver committed suicide a few years later.  Such a sad incident.....YET: it was an accident.

Please comfort these folks during this time, they are gonna need every bit of support they can get......THERE IS NO NEED FOR THEM TO HAVE ANY MORE GUILT THAN THEY ALREADY HAVE!!!  Since the days of the chariot children have sometimes gotten under foot to the point of fatality....what happened to your High School friends has happened before and it will happen again.....

Hope you can be there for them.

This just scares the shit out of me as it is one of my worst fears as a parent! We have 4 vehicles not mentioning the tractors and I am so paranoid of this its not funny. I have even had bad feelings roght before backing up when I know my children are nowhere to be found. I still get out and check.

My heart aches for this family.
