It was B&W so hard to tell but I noticed some of them were wearing what looked like shiny Ballistic Nylon bullet proof vests, At least they said they were bullet proof vests in the movie.
Did they have that type during the Korean War? I thought it wasn't till Vietnam. The movie was made in 1959

The movie was made only several years after the Korean War. The vests are accurate. Before nylon they were made out of fabric which held ballistic "plates". What they were made out of (steel or plastic) I do not recall.

Actually, the vests used in Vietnam weren’t bullet proof either.

In reality, the term “bullet proof” is a misnomer anyway – I seriously doubt there’s a wearable vest available even now that’ll stop a .50 BMG.

I do vaguely recall the No. Koreans or Communist Chinese using of some sort of ballistic vest in the Korean War that would defeat (or at least really slow down) .30 M-1 carbine rounds

One of my uncles (mother's older brother) was actually on Pork Chop Hill. We have a picture of him in some sort of commo shack with a very scared look on his face.
He died a few years ago. RIP uncle Eddie.

Nothing more than the M1 carbine being used beyond it's effective range and the underpowered bullet being stopped by the heavy wool padding of the Chicom clothes.

If I remember correctly the Korean War vests were made of overlapping ceramic plates encased in a nylon shell. There were jackets and ahorts. We were issued thse flak/shrapnel protective  vests early in the VietNam war.
