(I'm posting this here and not on the feedback board because I'm not naming names on who the other party was and I'm not interested in slamming him.  I'm just venting)

But . . . I responded to a WTB for a certain gun that I had an extra of I would consider selling.  The seller's profile listed a foreign jurisdiction as his location.  So I IM'd the guy that I had gun "X" available and ask him where he lives.  I receive a response the seller is located in a northeastern state to which I replied I would only want to sell to a Florida resident.

Response back from person:

I have friends, Family ...and I travel there 2 times a month. I keep some of business in Florida and have a corporation there.

Give me a price and pics as I cannot guarantee this deal will go through and I would love to have a back-up plan in place.

Thansk

I respond by reiterating my desire to sell to a Florida resident and the fact he has just told me he's from a northeastern state.

Second response:

"You can sell to me or you can sell to my father.  Either way we are residents."

Uh oh.  Sounds like someone either wants to do a straw purchase through his father or something else is not passing the smell test.t  I respond I'm no longer interested.

To which I receive a third response:

You can the sell the gun to ANOTHER RESIDENT...that is not a "straw purchase" like you think it is.
Forget about it! You have no clue about the law and it shows. I told you I was resident...that is not illegal.

Good luck with the sale of your weapon.

Ok, let's see.  I have no clue about the law but this guy is saying I can transfer it to his father and also that he's a Florida resident now (when he claims to be a resident of a northeastern state in an earlier email).  Well, it may be possible he's a dual resident, but it sure didn't sound right based on the exchange so far, and my personal policy is that as soon as anyone hints at having someone else purchase a gun for them, the jig is up for that.  So I sent a somewhat curt reply back:

You first told me you're from [northeastern state].

Then you told me I could sell the gun to your father.

Then you tell me you are a resident.

Something in that littany doesn't smell right to me and that's not the way I do business . . .

Then I receive the following back:

Then make statements like that....trust me when it comes to legality I am all about keeping things straight. Your failure to comprehend that I just may quite possibly own a home in 2 states has made you ASSUME I was a [northeastern state] RESIDENT when in fact I am not.
On the other hand I simply offered to you the chance to sell the weapon to any number of individuals whom I know..Friends..father..etc. Once more you ASSUMED I wanted to do a "straw purchase" in order to avoid paperwork.
So far you ASSUMED too much and lost a sale. While during the course of losing the sale you managed to make yourself look foolish and say things that reflect negatively on knowledge of the law- regardless of what YOU say.

What a dumb comment.  "On the other hand I simply offered to you the chance to sell the weapon to any number of individuals whom I know..Friends..father..etc. Once more you ASSUMED I wanted to do a "straw purchase" in order to avoid paperwork."  That sounds like a straw purchase.

The worst of all this was, I had gun "X" in 96% condition and was going to offer a fair price on it of $900.  Normal price on an "X" in this condition is $1100-1200 since they have a rather cult-ish following.  So the lost sale isn't really a problem as I can sell the "X" anytime I want.

btw, the other party has all of 500 posts and his email was entitled "Check My Feedback", which was between 5 and 10.  Frankly, I don't know what gets into some people around this place.
