Afplayboy and I really want and really need a safe.  Unfortunately, we don't have the money to get one right now.  We are more than likely going to just buy one and put it on our credit card.

Since our car got broken into today, we are really nervous about leaving our house without have a safe.

Do you have any advice for what we can do until we can afford to get one?  What would we be able to do to hide our guns and other things of value?

Thanks for all your help.

A strong chain and a lock - attached to the plumbing or something big.

2 pistols, 3 rifles

As for hiding your stuff, good luck if some =one wnats it they will find it, all you van do is slow them down.

If you have a closet with a swing open door, you can install a lock on it, and add a dead bolt, that will help, but not much, just slow them down a little.

I have a Liberty Colonial safe, and I like it, it is bolted to a slab floor, and does give me a little piece of mind.

We would love to do that when we get a safe.

The only thing about that is that we are renting an apartment...and what it will be like if we get charged...or even if it's easy to bolt it.

I have a fake ceiling in one of my closets. I don't think anyone would notice it since the closet light is attached to it. I also have a cheap Stack On "safe" that all of my cheap C&R guns go in.

Put it on the CC, only if you can pay it off in less than four months.  I would normally say don't buy anything on credit you can't immediately pay off, but in this case I'll make an exception.  You won't believe the burden you'll have lifted off your shoulders when that safe is delivered.

Pick out the biggest safe you can afford - and then get the next bigger one.  Trust me on this.

Do you live on the ground floor or on a higher floor?

Until you get a place of your own, look into a gun locker, they are not built as strong as a safe, BUT you cna bolt them to wall studs instead of the floor.

Home Depot also sells the Sentry safes that weigh 300? pounds. IIRC they're in the $300-$400 range. I think it'd be pretty tough for a burglar to drag one of those out of an apartment without getting noticed.

That's why AF was asking about car alarms. BTW, the Clifford Matrix 10 is the one I got, I don't know if I told you that AF.

Go to BassPro and check out their 12/24 electronic locking gun safe. It's what I got, my employee discount dropped the 800 tag to 500 for me :-), 1200 degree protection for 30 minutes, and rock solid construction.

we can have it paid off in 2 months so that is no problem.

as for the biggest one...we live on the second floor so the weight is a little bit of an issue but we've been told that their is a concrete slab seperating the floors so it shouldnt be a problem.

im thinking the first one here

Yes, I bought a Sentry model 5251-1 (59"T x 19.5"W x 16"D) at Lowes on sale for $300 in Nov.

Get a Sentry, it's affordable and will at least slow someone down or stop them if it's bolted down well and didn't bring tools. Around $329 at wal mart, home depot has the same but I think they are a bit more. They are not fireproof but they are better than a locker.

I was a little off on the price, here is the link, they do have a 10 gun one for 200 something but it is pretty lite. Sentry Wal Mart

The one that I looked at at HD said that it was made for HD. Maybe it's that little trap door or somethin in the floor thats different, I don't know.

Yeah.  I'm in the same boat.  I can't afford a good safe right now and am not one to use credit.

I picked up a Sentry from Bi Mart for under $300 Fall last and it is fine for now.  I've got it bolted to the floor and wall so unless rogues are very serious it will be difficult to move.  I don't think there is any fire rating to speak of on it but for the price it makes me feel a lot safer.  No pun intended. OK, bad pun intended.

Rather than buy a safe I do believe I am going to make a "gun room" in my next hovel.  I'm about to move on to some rural land in NE TN and build a cob/timber/stone hut.  Somewhere inside I'll do a poured block with rebar room and find a used vault door which I'll hide with some sort of wood work.
Should be fine.

Until then the Sentry fills the need at an price a poor hillbilly banjo art boy can afford.

Look at the American Eagle line of Cannon safes that Academy sells...they have two, one is 587.00 and the next larger one is 687.00 and are a great bang for your buck.

Cannon has one of the best warrantys in the safe business, as well.

If you want a really good, albeit somewhat expensive and heavy safe, check out the Fort Knox safes sold by Steve’s out of Vienna.  He’ll almost certainly be at the Chantilly gun show next month.

If you need something inexpensive and fairly light, the Sentry safes are – for the price – fantastic.  They’re real safes, not sheet metal lockers.  I haven’t been there in a couple of years, but the Manassas Wal-Mart (near the battlefield) used to have them for less than $200.

If you get a lightweight safe and can’t bolt it down, be sure and load it up with heavy stuff (like additional firearms ) so it’d be hard to carry off.

I bought a Stack-on from Dicks for $70 a month ago.  Works for a simple non-fire cabinet and holds eight long guns as advertised if you cram them in with KY.  Holds two AKs two ARs and several hand guns with room to spare and I bolted it to the studs in a closet.  Yes,  a burggler could break into it with tools or get it off the wall but that would take time and most criminals that do B&E around here are kids.
