First off as a new follower of arfcom I want to say it's been very informative and enlightening to read your questions and responses. The info and comments have been priceless. Question: Last week my daughter and I were watching The hunt for red october. In the movie the comander of the russian sub chasing red october says that the message about red october was seven hours old because they didn't surface for communtcation. Is this still the fact? Subs cannot communtcate unless they surface? Thx jb |

Exactly. If his orders had been to wait deep, then it's perfectly reasonable. What it depends upon is whether an SSN would have a VLF wire out to receive VLF. The problem with that is that a VLF wire is LONG and restricts your maneuverability (because the high risk of cutting it during fast maneuvers). |
