Rookie Tampa Officers Shoot, Kill Motorist Who Aims Car At Them

ASSOCIATED PRESS

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- A pair of rookie officers fatally shot a driver who tried to run them over, police said.

Gregory T. Sanderson, 33, died at the scene of the Thursday night shooting in north Tampa as paramedics worked to stabilize him.

Officer David Joyner, 24, pulled the man over for running a stop sign and Sanderson gave Joyner a false name. Joyner joined the force less than seven months ago, police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said.

A second officer, Jason Brocato, who has only a month's more experience than Joyner, arrived to help and a struggle ensued. The officers fired a Taser at the motorist, but one of the electric stun gun's prongs fell off and Sanderson was able to put the car in gear and hit the gas, aiming the car at the officers, McElroy said.

The officers opened fire, hitting Sanderson, she said.

Both officers are on paid administrative lead pending an investigation into the incident.

Sanderson had served a 10-year sentence in state prison for armed robbery with a deadly weapon and was released in 1998. The cops were rookies but the suspect was an old pro.

To bad for the cops something like this happened so early in their careers.

I guess that if this happened in Los Angeles, the officers would have just had to let him run them over.

Was watching it on the news this morning before work. The bg had lots of priors using weapons.

Perfect.  At least now we wont have to pay for the shitbag to live in prison for 10 more years after he failed to rehabilitate.

American prisons are not rehabilitation or punishment. They are simply warehouses for human beings.

Let's hear it for the street cops who can take a dangerous criminal out of the population more effectively than the attorneys, judges and prisons combined.

Cheers to the boys in blue, for doing a hard job the right way.

There is no such thing as rehabilitation. There has never been any program in prison which has been shown to have any rehabilitative effect.
