Do you have iTunes loaded?

You also have to let the internal battery charge for about three days.  Or until the red/yellow indicator turns green.

Actually it's an hour or two and then you can start throwing tracks on it.

Red/yellow indicator? Oh, you talking about an iPod photo with the color screen?

PS DpC:

Did you read any instructions that may have been in the box?

ha

Seriously though, I think it just needs to charge. And you should load iTunes first before you do anything.

And let us know what OS you're on (PC or Mac) as well as whether the iPod is a new one, and if it's a PC one or a Mac+PC one. (i.e.: If it has been formatted for the Mac, and you're on a PC, it will ask you if you want to reformat it)

I wish I could help, but I don't get to play with Mrs. ByteTheBullet's mini. Her's is out of warranty(duh) and started having problems with the 'wheel'.

If you cannot figure it out, and don't want to pay to have it fixed, send it to me and I will take that puppy apart. I have wanted to take one apart since I first saw them.

Yes, I take LOTS of things apart. I usually get them back together, usually.

Alrighty...

mini ipod - brand new out of the box
loaded the software
updated itunes
running on XP
battery fully charged - off the laptop so obv the USB port DOES work.
yet when I plug it into the USB nothing - nada - zip happens.
Yes I opened that little booklet that came with it. Pretty damn useless. It says plug into USB port and Itunes will launch - if not open Itunes and follow the prompts on the screen.

Sigh.

I just got the iPod photo model.  iTunes didn't see it until I installed the software that came with the iPod.  It then started loading tunes on a dead battery.
When you plug it in you should at least see new hardware detected.

OK, does the iPod show up in the iTunes window? Does the iPod react when you plug it in- does it say "Do not unplug" or "Charging"?

If not... something's up. The first time you plugged the iPod in, did it ask you if you wanted to format it?
5/17/2005 12:13:37 PM EDT
[#10]
Yes - it charged and now it says charged.
Yes it asked me to format...
then it asked to restart my computer. Ever since it restarted nothing happens when I plug it into the USB port.
Nope - launch Itunes and nothing - doesn't recognize the ipod.

The fact the USB port charged the battery does not mean the USB port is connecting to the IPod.

I would SO love for this to wind up being a PC issue.

Hey, I admit, I had to take my first iPod back to the store. The left channel didn't work!

Now, I have my 20 gb and my wife has a 4 gb iPod Mini (and she works on the PC).

Correct... Apple quality is not nothing special, certainly no better than your average PC maker.

In the “control panel” click the system icon to find service pack #.

If connected the IPod should show up as a drive in My Computer or the Windows Explorer.

BS and you know it!

Take a look at ANY survey of computer users and you'll see that Apple's quality is very high, and that complaints are few. Consumers Reports shows that.

BTW let me run down my computer problems:

2 PCs (an HP desktop): one has been sent back TWICE for mother board failures and the monitor once because it stopped working. Wife hasn't had a problem with her Sony laptop.

3 Macs: NO problems.

I also work on Macs at work - over the years, I've worked on 10 to 15 of them day to day and quite a few more than that on an infrequent basis. I've seen 2 that were bad. One was mine, one was my boss'. Not a bad record when contrasted with the PCs I've used.

But please, let's not turn this into a Mac bashing thread. I am trying to help DpC out. We Mac guys do that you know.

I would suggest you first unplug the IPod, uninstall iTunes, reboot, reinstall iTunes, reboot, plug in the IPod.

If that does not work call Apple.

Hey, have you considered looking the problem up on Apple's excellent discussion forums?

They're very helpful. You might find out exactly what the problem is there.

Are you plugged directly into a USB port and not a USB hub or extension? When you plug the ipon ino the usb port the ipod screen should also turn on and say "do not disconnect". If not, this may be a port or cable issue.

AHA!
it "*appears* to be working

I called Apple support and after a very condescending lecture about how this was my *only* complimentary phone call and how I should purchase the blah blah blah blah it all came down to I needed to push menu and the round button thing at the same time and hold them down until my something happened.

now it works.

oh hell....
now it just downloaded all my kids wiggles songs onto the ipod. How the heck do I get them off??

OOOOH, first up, go to your preferences and turn OFF "automatically update iPod" (or something like that, I don't have my iPod cable on me so I don't remember what it is exactly)

Also,

To delete music, connect the iPod to the computer, open the iPod in the "Source" window (on the left, in iTunes) and select and delete the undesired songs.

edit: sorry, added the bolded above. For clarity.
