If you rule out hunting and sport shooting, what is the minimum number of guns you NEED, and what are they?  The reason I ask, is that a lot of associates, and some of my wifes friends, see me as the guy to ask about guns, security, etc.  I usually suggest that starting from zero, the following works pretty well:

1) A general purpose, full size auto pistol in an effective caliber that you can control.  Usually a GLOCK 19, 17, 23, or 22.  Works for car, home defense, some concealed carry, fairly effective for 0-30 yards against multiple assailants.

2) A small auto or revolver for ultra concealed carry.  Something you can ALWAYS have with you.  This varies from person to person.  Kel Tec P3AT, Kahr PM9 if they can, S&W J frame if they must.

3) A long arm for "anything else".  I suggest a 16 inch AR for those who can swing it, but an AK, or any one of several other rifles, will fit the bill and hit a person out to 200 yards with iron sights.

Then I recommend night sights, a light, a paddle holster, a few extra mags, and suitable ammo for #1, a reliable carry method, at jeast one spare mag, and ammo for #2, and a sling, extra mags, and ammo for #3.

Thoughts?

I would say three,
A pistol in 9mm or higher
A shotgun in 20ga or higher
A rifle pref semi-autp in .223 or higher.

All you really need. But want, that's another animal

Fear the man with only ONE gun..........

That aside - minimum?

A longgun ( centerfire rifle preferably) and a sidearm...........I personally have near duplicates of all my firearms.........I'm very happy with the AR15 - so I keep buying AR15's......So my house is slowly starting to look like a military armory........for practical purposes - you want to limit the different types of ammuniton and weapons systems you use. I only use NATO ammunition feeding weapons and battle-proven weapons (or their semiauto equivalent)

Examples (setting aside my personal prejudice here):

Main Handgun - 1911, Browning HiPower, Glock, HK, Sig, Beretta 92FS, or CZ75 series, etc

Main Rifle - Semiautomatic centerfire rifle such as an AR15, FAL, M1A, HK91. (Kalashnikov and Siminov designs arent listed because I don't like the idea of Warsaw pact weapons whose main source for ammuntion resupply is overseas)

Shotgun - If you need one - a reliable pumpaction shotgun. There are some reliable semiautomatic actions on the market but pump actions are cheaper and more adept at feeding all types of ammuniton.

Ammuntion types: 9mm NATO, .45ACP (very common though not used NATO specific), .40S&W (LEO widespread use), 5.56mm NATO, 7.62mm NATO, 12 gauge for shotguns.

Edited to Add - I disagree with the use of paddle holsters UNLESS they have belt-loops in addition the paddle.......the holsters are very convenient but many people have drawn their weapon and their holster at gun ranges resulting in some significant embarrasment......in real life having a paddle holster loosen up and being drawn hastily with your weapon attached could be fatal.......I have a paddle holster still but am leery of it - I have not personally "drawn" my holster but it does happen.......a lot........

that being said, I carry my Glock 23C everywhere almost all the time so for me it fits both #1 and #2 though I am in the market for a smaller piece

for #3 I'm partial to my bushmaster M17, though I would have a hard time choosing between it and my MAK90 underfolder for sheer reliability and the fact that I have a ton of ammo for it in spam cans

I no longer recommend a Glock 19 -- I experienced, repeatedly, a known problem with the steep feedramp; that is, it will not feed many hollowpoint bullets at all.  Total FTF.  I could not in good concicisnese recommend this.  I sold mine because I was not comfortable with it for protection.

Have a glock 19 and have put a few 1,000 HP's threw it. Also about 6'000 FMJ.

that is why my new FAL might just replace my AR or AK in a SHTF situation.  its a bit heavy but 308 does the trick every single time.  the AK will still be the designated bug out vehicle weapon due to being super compact when folded

A pistol in a prefrebly in a common ammo type with high capacity mags such as a Glock 17.

OK intermediate-short and long range.  Also a higher calibre is generally a better "harvester" also extra reach and "UMPH" when it gets their.

Depends on what you were planning for.
Minimum:
1.  Concealed carry/Service Pistol: 9mm up to 45, depends what you are comfortable with.  Should be concealable and able to be non-concealed.
2. Shotgun: A good pump, 870 special/polic model.
3. Semi Auto Rifle: AR15, AK47, SKS depending on budget
4. 22 rifle: good for practice, fun, availability of cheap ammo. Ruger 10/22, marlin bolt or semi.
5.  22 pistol: cheap ammo, cheap to practice with. Ruger Mark 2

Note: i never said i would actually arm the block. I woudl have enough weapons to though.

Think about it. shtf. there's about as many people in a city block as you have close family members and close friends. Naturally, extended family members are screwed, but parents, brothers, sisters, children... I can think of roughly that many people that i woudl trust with guns and that i woudl be willing to help if shtf.

To have a complete and workable firearms "toolbox" you need the following

1) a short bbled revolver in .38 Spl or higher
2) A full size auto pistol in 9mm or higher
3) A 12 gauge pump action shotgun with an 18 inch bbl (short enough for HD/long enough for hunting)
4) A semi-auto rifle for offensive action. 5.56mm or higher.
5) A bolt action rifle for longer ranges and for SHTF reliabilty. (i.e. An M1 Rifle has to use .30-06 loaded to M2 ball specs, while an M1903 can use ANY .30-06 load.)

I consider the very minimum to be:

.22 LR (rifle)
1 pistol (9mm or larger)
1 shotgun (20ga or larger)
1 hi-pwr rifle (.223 or larger)
5/7/2005 9:30:45 AM EDT
[#37]
I'd have around:

.30-06 bolt gun w/scope

AR (shorty style. If I'm 200+ meters away from someone, outgunned, and there's cover and concealment, I'll get away)

.22 pistol (Browning Buckmark) Shoots like a rifle, eliminates the need for a .22 rifle

12 guage-NOT an "assault style", better to be used for self defense and hunting. Ever try to shoot a quail or clay pigeon with a pistol grip shotgun? Ain't easy, wastes precious ammo.

Handgun chioce is tough for me. I like the high capacity of my HiPower, the capacity and reliability of my 92FS, the power of my 1911, and the rifle cartridge-in-a-handgun of the .357. I guess I'd have to take the Beretta with hicap mags.

and my Colt .380 as a deep concealed gun.

I think that covers it. And I would not be carrying all these weapons around with me. Take a mission-specific weapon out with me.

Yes - and it sucks.......especially when one of those is a MK19 or M2HB ... ( ahhh Army memories.........)

Take Steyr AUGs advice especially if you are on foot - as you well could end up.........Initially, get a really GOOD rifle.........followed by a RELIABLE handgun if you have funds. Practice. Practice some more. Stock up on ammo. and keep practicing. Add other guns if you feel a NEED.

Secondly, take every subjective opinion on this board with a grain of salt..... (is there such thing as an "objective" opinion?). Yes - that includes me - I am very opinionated.

Mr. Maryland,

lol...the only thing liberal about wisconsin is Madison. Note: our governor is liberal also, but he's in madison so the two count as one.

Would i hand out rifles to my neighbors? Well.... only one neighbor. If family and friends came over and wanted to stick together, that's where the extra weapons would come in handy.

And remember... it's always better to have too much as opposed to too little.

I think we need to keep the zombie  planning to a minimum in this one.  I think the question is what defensive guns do most people need at a minimum.  I think its three

(1) Pistol - large enough to be effective, but should be able to be concealed if necessary (i.e. not much larger that 1911).  9mm and up.

(2) Rifle - centerfire, semi-automatic in .223 or better (a pistol caliber carbine would be a 2nd best option for this one).

(3) Shotgun - 12 or 20 guage with reduced recoil buck.  Pump or semi with an 18-20 inch barrel.

I think that this would cover most defensive situations that the average person is likely to face.

I would say, "2".

1 pistol = Glock 17 (Glock 26 if I it has to be concealed), mags and ammo.  Need a good carry holster and mag pouches.

1 rifle = AR-15, 16" and mags, mags, mags, ammo, ammo, ammo, ammo (as much as you can carry).  Need a good sling and mag pouches.

That should take care of most situations anyone comes upon.

heres my minmium witch just so happens to be what I own.

22 rifle: mossberg plinkster (didnt have the money for a 10/22 and hey it was cheap and it works)
for harvesting small game not to mention ammo is dirt cheap and easy to stockpile.

pistol: Kimber pro carry 45 acp. (self defense)

Rifle: m1 Garand in 30-06 (big enough caliber for practly any game in NA) and also self defense if SHTF.

12 guage shotgun (springfield break action single shot model unknown as per my 22 it was cheap and it works) harvesting game and self defensive.

[#49]
Can I say it...I got to say it...I can't help myself......... a .22 and a .38

I guess it depends on their needs/ wants.
1)  .22 rifle  for practice and small game
2)  a decent pistol or handgun for self defence or hunting if they wanted to go that route
3)  a 12 gauge shotgun for hunting or self defence
4)  a long gun; maybe an AR with the option of a couple of uppers.  I like the 6.5mm Grendel platform, allows a good hunting caliber and much superior to the 5.56.  Downside is widespread availibility of brass for it at this time; but it's getting much more popular.  Or/and a bolt gun in say .308 or other significant caliber.
