Supposing gyrojet rifles and pistols were available and ammunition was both relatively low cost and reliable (if properly stored), who here would buy one just for amusement's sake or as a curio item?

I would. The attention I'd get when I broke one out at the range would be worth it alone. The novelty value of a really weird gun would be a bonus.

Safe queen, I don't think I would even shoot it due to rarity of the gun and ammo

They are bizarre enough to pique my interest but I can't see paying much for something they would just be a conversation piece among fellow gun nuts.

I'm all for different technology, but you could probably roll-your-own easily with shotgun
shells and off-the-shelf model rocket engines.

I've made 37mm loads that work similarly without the boom, with minimum effort.

You would need a 10/22 and a .38 before getting a Gyrojet.....

I'm still kicking myself for not buying the only one I've seen for sale, About 13 years ago in a small shop in Fremont Ca. I don't remember how much they wanted, but it wasn't much more than  maybe $350-400?

IIRC, ATF classified the ammo as DD's in recent years.

6 rounds for $9.00 = $1.50 per round

That would be $8.30 in 2005

Destructive device? It's less powerful than most firearm ammunition and nearly impossible to find. WTF?

Didn't they also have accuracy problems because as the propellent burned off the weight of the projectile changed and threw off the accuracy.

Needs a guided or homing projectile.

Basically the "bullets" are teeny tiny rockets so theoretically the gun would have no recoil. Just in case you need to shoot someone in space and don't want to end up spinning out of control from the recoil of your 1911.

Wonder what modern technology could do with the idea?

The Rate of Fire of Caseless Ammo with 10% of the recoil..  mmmmm... Perfect Sub Guns..

My brother owned two Gyrojets.  One carbine and two pistols.  One of the pistols had documentation it was carried in Vietnam by an American soldier.

He shot a pistol one time and never found the round.  It penetrated everything in it's way.

He sold them, along with all the ammo, for a big profit.

Not even close.  Gyro Jet's were loaded with a fast burning SMOKELESS propellent.  A model rocket engine uses black powder.  The velocity differences are HUGE.

Gyro Jet PISTOLS were deemed DD's in the early models because they were pistols with smooth bores.  Later pistols had RIFLED bores, making them LEGAL.

They are inaccurate because of the necessary sloppy fit of the bullet in the bore.  Another safety issue is the ammunition because a barrel is nothing more than a launch tube.  In the event of a fire or other accidental ignition outside of the gun, the ammo is just as lethal as if it had been fired in a gun.

One intrepid man made a thin paper cone in which he dropped a lit cigarette, followed by a Gyro Jet round.  Soon enough, the round ignited and sped away just as if it had been fired from a pistol.

I'm still waiting for my Elemental suit to come in the mail.

They ran out of the flamer version, so I went with the small laser.

just load inferno rounds in the srm2

Worst firearm EVER.

Perhaps the most inaccurate handgun ever made. Also, at close range the projectile would not be up to speed yet, and hence penetration (if you were lucky enough to hit your target) may be very poor.

McUZI wanted to develop them again, especially a carbine. I cant believe he actually bought a gyrojet pistol.  Ammo's like $20 a pop.

But then I can't target infantry.

Flamer elementals are superior anyway. Lowever bv, they can swarm a mech and keep flaming it for heat each turn instead of damage, etc.

Then again, Salamanders are even better for that. Fireproof, each carries an Inferno SRM, and TWIN flamers.

Screw the Elemental, I want a Salamander for flaming goodness!
