Maybe this has been done before, but…

What firearm do you think is responsible for the most combat fatalities?  Consider all firearms used in all conflicts since blackpowder began to become the primary battlefield weapon in the late 1300’s to early 1400’s and make a guess.  I don’t think that we can know for sure, but please provide reasoning for your choice.

Here is mine:

Mauser Bolt Action Rifle

Used by Germany (and several other countries) in both world wars.  Russian casualties on the eastern front of World War 2 alone could place it in the running.  It was also used to great effectiveness against Americans in Cuba by the Spanish Army and against the British colonial army by the Boers in South Africa.  It is still a very popular rifle today, though, thankfully, it now is primarily used for hunting deer and other game instead of soldiers.

MG-42's killed more Russians than the Mauser.  German Infantry squads were formed around the MG.
