What are the differences between 00-04? Horsepower, tires etc. Thanks M4-AK |

Sorry..OT... I'm sitting in my family room this morning and I hear the exhaust note of a performance car...I'm thinking Ferrari or the like. I live in an area with alot of car execs (just outside Detroit) so I head out onto the deck to see whats driving down the court.... My son yells, "Dad! Its a Corvette!!" I see its a new production GT-40, black with silver stripes. And MAN! Does it sound cool idling past.... We walk out the the street and wait a couple minutes and here it comes back from the end of the court. The guys slows and rolls down the window and says his father lives down at the end of the court and told him I was a car guy (...Im always washing waxing tuning one car or another.....). Now, Im not a big Ford lover...there are some cool Fords, but nothing I get jazzed about. But this car....WOW! Was it sweet. The supercharged engine under plexiglass in the rear, the tight cockpit and brushed alum dash with a plethora of gargues......VERY COOL. We talk for a minute and he heads off. When he gets to the end of our street and pulls onto the main road, he winds it up and what a great sounding car.... Anyone got a spare $200K for me??? I want a GT-40! |

Thanks for the IM ColonelKlink. 99-01 has a claimed 360 hp. Different wheels and bolt pattern than later models, different intercooler bolt pattern. The intercooler was subject to recall, check before you buy. Rear gears are 3.55 and the driveshaft is steel. 99s have the strongest con rods. Also, these have regular headlights, tail lights, mirrors, etc. 02s have a claimed (actually underrated) 380hp, aluminum driveshaft, altezza/euro taillights, better looking headlights and cargo light, and turn signals in the mirrors. Also 3.73 gearing. I have an 02. 03-04 have the same as the 02s but the six disc changer is in the dash, not behind the seat, the carpet is nicer--its from a Navigator. The engine has the same 390 hp rating, but more like actually 420 at the crank--they are just a wee bit stronger than 02s. They also, as of halfway through the 02 model year (post 3-03 production), have more threads in the spark plug holes, to cure a defect in older years where plugs were spit and the aluminum threads stripped. Lightnings can be built to 450 RWHP, about 12.5 secs at the trac, without stripping a valve cover, but beyond that you need to replace the POS sintered con rods. The aftermarket is very, very strong. Good forums to check out are SVTPerformance.com, nloc.net and F150online.com. Another good site, although not a forum, is TimSkelton.com. I am thinking of trading to a Z06 though. The Lightning is paid off though, and I don't know if I want payments. |
Those aren't stock. They are the right height, but too narrow for a Lightning. You NEED all the traction you can get. Stock is 295/40/18, some came with dealer installed 20s and 295/40/20. Every Lightning also comes with a spare, 255/65/16 or something like that. |
Oops, just noticed you asked about tires right off the bat. Stock, for all years, AFAIK, was Goodyear F1s. Nittos are a good replacement, esp. the NT555R, if you don't mind getting new tires every 12k miles in exchange for sticking to the road. |

Wish Ford would continue with the Lightening. I'm very happy with this. Dodge RAM SRT-10: - 500HP/525ft-lb V-10 (same engine as Viper - 425HP/450ft-lb at the rear wheels) - 6-speed manual with Hurst shifter (same transmission as Viper) - Dana-60 rear-end - 22" wheels with Perelli Scorpion Zero's - Infinity audio system (amp/sub-woofer/5 speakers) www.lhup.edu/dfisher/srt1002.jpg www.lhup.edu/dfisher/srt1003.jpg www.lhup.edu/dfisher/srt1004.jpg www.lhup.edu/dfisher/srt1005.jpg ![]() |
500HP is awesome! Mine only makes 345 stock but I really enjoy it. Nice Truck by the way. |

I have to say this: If you want a sports car, buy a sports car. If you want a truck, buy a truck Why do the mixed? Have you seen the tow or load ratings on the Lightning? Not good. I'll grant you the performance is quite good, but it will never drive like a sports car, even if it can embarrass a number of them. A truck should be a truck, in my book. |
Corvette/Viper/... = Sports Car = Fun Lightening/SRT-10/SS Silverado/... = Hot Rod = Fun Conventional pick-up = Utility Vehicle = Recreation/Work/Fun They're not the same thing, never were, and people have them for different reasons. Who are you to tell me what I need or don't need? You sound like the Federal Gov't/ATF!!!!! |
It varies. hankooks, the cheapest acceptable tire, run around $150. They don't get good straight line traction but are reportedly very nice on a daily driver. Nitto drag radials cost $225-$300 and last 10-15k mi. An F1, NT404 or other similar, quality street tire will set you back about $250 a pop, sometimes more. Not too good on tire prices, but its a small price to pay for the smile the truck puts on your face. BTW, my truck gets 10mpg when I drive aggressively in town, 12 mpg combined (aggressive) and 16 mpg cruising on the highway. |
Huh? A Lightning has a steel bed. Personally, I think Chevy went in the wrong direction with the SS. AWD sucks, and its heavy. A standard cab with RWD and the same engine would kick ass. I hear you can order them that way in TX and some other states..... Lightning payload rating is 1500 pounds, tow rating is 5k. I think I might trade in for a Z06--I want to do some autocross/open track racing, and its cheaper to trade to a sports car than to make my farm implement suitable. I love the Lightning though. |
I like the auto, for cruising, daily driving and dragging. I would like a five speed auto with sequential button shifting though, for corners. |
