background - I had the enjoyment [or displeasure] of going to a town hall meeting this past week.  The meeting was put on by a State Senator here in Oregon who has no less than 10 bills limiting Oregonian's rights to own and use firearms.  I went to defend our rights.

While questioning this senator a lady interrupts me and asks "Why do you own guns" [she was being rude].  I answered "Because I want too" and went on questioning the senator and she repeats her question to me. "Why on earth would you own a gun?" So in frustration I said "Listen I own guns because I hunt and because I believe in self protection." so she says "You kill animals?" and I said....
"yes, and I eat them too."  It shut her up too!

Anyone have any quotes to add?  Patty

I surprise myself sometimes.  Actually it was surprising that I was able to keep my temper.  The liberals were being very rude.  We ARFCOMers out numbered them about 2 - 1 too!  Patty

good job patty,  How old are you? Can you teach other women your views!!!

How about, "You dont need an assault weapon to go hunting"

Me "Yea I dont need one to go hunting I am not a hunter, Im a target shooeter!"
"Oh and I dont own an assault weapon but wished I owned a assault rifle"

Or

"We need the AWB to ban automatic weapons from criminals"

"If we ban them then no one can get them"

"Theres no need for assault weapons"

Whenever somebody full of anti-gun propoganda makes a comment to me along those lines, I always scoff or make a PBBBTTT sound of disbelief, exclaim that it's BS and then explain, in simple terms without too much detail, why they're wrong. More often than not they're receptive of what I have to say because I'm not saying it as a "crazed red-neck gun-nut" but as Joe Ordinary who happens to better informed than you.

I've made a lot of people see the light about different gun issues. I wait until they're at the point where they're curious to know more and realize just how ignorant they've been of gun issues, then I casually let slip in conversation that I own guns. Once they discover that I own guns, it gets even better.

"Yeah, but most people who own guns are redneck gun-nuts."
"Do you think I'm a redneck gun-nut, or some dangerous looney?"
"Well, no."
"That's funny. I guess all my guns haven't made me go psychotic yet."
"You own guns?"
"Well, yeah. Why don't you?"

I've never introduced anyone to shooting (not for lack of trying) but I've gotten a few interested to the point where they found a friend or relative who was a LEO/military to take them to a range or have somebody take them hunting. It's very gratifying to get people started on the path towards enlightenment and awareness.

well you just brought up a second quote from yours truly.  one of my hecklers asked me "why do you need to own a submachine gun?" and I answered "I don't, I wish I did, but I don't.  Besides, you wouldn't know what one was so why do you worry about mine?"  Not too good, I know but what can I say.

"If someone has a gun and is trying to kill you, it would be reasonable to shoot back with your own gun."
The Dalai Lama (May 15, 2001, The Seattle Times), speaking at the "Educating Heart Summit" in Portland, Oregon, when asked by a girl how to react when a shooter takes aim at a classmate

I like that one. Even the Dalai Lama says self protection is a good thing!

I've had a few people get uppity with me about my weapons. I explain to them about the people I have pissed off on their behalf that might want a piece of me. Oh, and I'll protect them with the same weapons I use to protect myself. I often bring it up early in the conversation about the response time of police (here it can be upwards of 30 minutes depending on where you are in the county) and my weapons are primarily for protection, not hunting. The second amendment isn't about hunting. I don't intend on taking a dirtnap because some jackass liberal decided I'm not worthy to protect myself.

Can't argue with idiots, but you can make them stomp off in a huff knowing they've lost.
Or better yet they say "we'll have to agree to disagree" which is when you go for the kill because you've got 'em! I love when I hear that. It's like in Mortal Kombat when the announcer would say "FINISH HIM!".

Just let me know when and where.  I went because of a quote Sen. Burdick put in the paper [that and the fact if her bills passed I would be a felon 100 times over]

She raises the possibility of parents or teachers with concealed weapons permits bringing their guns to school, and students getting their hands on them.

“I’m talking about Sally the reading mom who happens to leave her purse behind” with a gun inside, Burdick said.

I wanted to ask her WTF was she thinking in regards to women??  But I never got the chance there. [I'll save it for a more opprotune time].

* Patiently (or not depending on how irritating they are) remind them how it's already illegal to kill, rape, maim, steal, extort or whatever else you can do if you're misusing a gun.

* Banning guns simply means that law-abiding citizens do not have access to firearms to defend themselves.

* Criminals do not obey laws. That's why they're criminals. Anything past that is feel good pap.

* The police (thanks to a supreme court ruling IIRC) have no obligation to be there when you need them. You're on your own for defending yourself. How best to do that? Having a firearm handy and training to go with it is essential.

BTW you did a good job Patty, just thought I'd add some. I know that some if not all of them are obvious but they keep getting swept under the rug when the gun control issue comes out.

Hi macman37, thank you.  We were well represented and we did get several of the points you mentioned above covered.  I flat out said "Please explain to me why limiting my rights as a law abiding citizen will keep criminals from committing more crimes?"  Of course she had no answers.  Their only arguement is why do I need an AR and it's as if they have no ability to reason with "Why shouldn't I be allowed to own one?"  There is no way they can understand my life style and there is no way I can understand there's.  I have a very high regard for LEO's but I'm not stupid.  There is no way the police can be there all the time.  From my own personal experience - once in Everett Washington I was assulted by a kid one night when I was closing up a swimming pool I worked at.  He came after me [with non christain intent!] and I shoved him away from me and locked myself in the manager's office and called the police.  He stood out banging on the door - trying to get in for several hours.  I called the police and the dispatch said they were tied up and would not be able to respond for quite sometime, was I safe?  I said - realitively.  3 hours later [he was still trying to get in - albeit not as agressively] dispatch called me back and asked if I still needed help.  I said YES.  They never did come.  Long gone are my days of expecting someone else to protect me!

You made the mistake of calling the cops.... should have called a fellow ARFCOMMER.

Many years ago I lived in a rural area near where three counties came together.  Any time I called the SO, they would argue about which county I was in, each insisting I was in one of the other two counties and needed to call someone else.  None would give any help, and even if they were willing, were at least 45 minutes away.

Another time when I called and got the jurisdiction runaround, I asked that they find out whoever did have jurisdiction and have them drop off some body bags next time they were in the area, I was getting ready to take care of business (and let them hear me chambering a round in the Mini-14 over the phone).  I told them goodbye and hung up.  THAT got some action... in about 45 minutes.  They got there and I asked them, "You got my body bags?  This is all over, but I might need them next time."  They were not amused.  But they were less amused after I spoke to them about their dispatcher's BS.  I told them they were dismissed, I would never call again.

From then on I have never called police until whatever was going on was over.  A useless waste of time.

"why do you own 150 pairs of shoes?"

"What's with that massive wardrobe you got?"

"I think we should ban sports cars, they kill more people than guns and serve no legitamate purpose."

"So is your spoon the thing that made you fat?"

Beyond that there is no point in arguing, it is impossible to logically argue with a person who has mad a decision based on emotion, as logic played no part in the decision process.

The way I like to argue is from the underlying principle of the 2nd Amendment.  The 2nd is not just about guns, guns are the means, the ends are that people have a God given right to self defense and no state can take that away from them.

(1) So ask the stupid hippie if she believes that someone has the right to protect themselves from a rapist or murder.  If she says no, you've won, because most people are not pacifists (especially when the example is rapist).  If she says yes, move on to question two.

(2) then ask her why she wants to deny your right to the means to protect yourself.  At this point, the hippie almost has to concede that some guns are o.k., but they'll often say stupid crap like "you have a handgun, why do you need a rifle?"  Then you can pwn them, because hippies don't no crap about guns, tactics, ballistics, or any of the other factors involved with guns.  Just be careful of the "some police expert said only use a shotgun with birdshot" crap.

(3) The smarter hippies will duck the questions and say stuff like "more guns on the street make everyone's life more dangerous" or "you're more likely to have a kid kill themselves."  This is a harder argument, and at this point you have to use Lott or other other statisticians to prove them wrong.  Or make them watch Clockwork Orange, the documentary on modern-day England.

Hippie taunting is one of my favorite pasttimes

I would never be able to come up with that on my own!  A gentleman did ask why guns and not cars, considering more people are killed in Oregon each year due to cars.  But you're right - you can't argue with these types.  This same gentleman said: "Let me get this straight, you're for earlier release of convicted felons, you're against the death penalty for anyone who kills a less than 40 hour a week LEO and your against the individual's right to self protect with guns?"  She said "Yes" very firmly.

I had a couple sitting behind me with heavy Brittish accents and the man asks me [interrupts me] "Why do you want to own a submachine gun"  I wasn't able to think quick enough on my feet so I just glared at him and said "You don't even know what a submachine gun is." and he babblered on so finally I asked him "What country are you from?" [thinking England or Australlia] and he said "I'm an AMERICAN" so I said "Well ACT like it then!

I calmly explained to her "for the predators"  She asked what kind and I said "Cougars" She says "There's no cougars.  You don't need no AR15."  I hiked up my dress and showed two scares on my leg from being attacked by one of those Cougars she claimed non existant.  She wasn't impressed.

Ask Them, Do They NEED to Be Free.

With Out A Gun, How are they Going to Protect Their Freedom.

It Is About Freedom, NOT why do You Need an Assault Weapon.

If you Tell them you are going to make them your Slave, How will they Stop You.

If They say Call 911, the government.

You, could then tell them, How Can I help You, I'm from the government.

If the Government has ALL the Guns, We Will Be come Slaves.

If they said that would never happen in the United States,

Ask them if they Saw 9/11 Happening.

If the Pilots On 9/11 were Free To carry Guns like in Isreal, Would 9/11 Happen.

It Is About Freedom to Protect Your Life.

It Is Not About Guns,

It Is About Protecting Freedom.

Asked them, Do They Need To Be Free.

Just Don't be surprise if they say, No, they Do not want to be Free.

Why do YOU need Freedom of Speech?

Why do YOU need to be secure in YOUR person, property, papers, and effects against unwarranted searches and seizures?

Why do YOU need Freedom against bearing witness against YOURSELF?

I NEED MY 2ND AMENDMENT RIGHTS TO PROTECT THE REST OF MY RIGHTS.

Without the 2nd Amendment right, there would be NO OTHERS!

I was in a PoliSci class debating guns.

Me: Semiautomatic military pattern rifles like my AR15 are good for self defense.
Anti: They are only good for killing people!
Me: Self defense is about killing people.

Light bulbs came on over the heads of the people in the room. They had never had the thought that a good person might kill another person in self defense. Well, maybe they had it in passing, but they never connected it with their thoughts on gun control and realized that they too would be unable to defend themselves.

I tell them the ugly truth...

 (a)  Some people desperately need killing,

 (b)  and the world is much better off without them.
