If course they aren't clueless.  Courier is the ILA font.  ILA rules say to use it.  If you didn't use it you could possibly get graded down in some of my english classes.

+1 - For "official" things, at least...

For "fun" I have some nifty "aftermarket" fonts I like to use, including "Buffied" (dripping-blood font from the BtVS credits), "Village" (the font from all the Village signs in The Prisoner), and several Star Trek fonts.  (Okay, I am a sci-fi geek. )

We professors are far from clueless!  The MLA (Modern Language Association) doesn’t specify a required font, but I require papers to be written in one of three fonts: Arial, Courier New, or Times New Roman.  I tell the class well ahead of time that Courier New will make their papers longer, but that I prefer to read Arial.  Honestly, you would be surprised how many students turn in their papers in Arial after I tell them that I know about their little scam!

Once, as an undergraduate in an advanced composition class, our assignment was to write a 7-10 page research paper.  I found a topic that was fascinating to me, and I wrote a great paper that in Arial font was over almost 13 pages!  I did some editing to get it to 12 pages, but I didn’t want to cut anything else, so I put it in Times New Roman to keep it under the 10 page limit.  It was exactly 10 pages, though.

For graphic design, I prefer to use whatever font fits best.

For writing, TNR or Courier, usually TNR, but I prefer Courier.

MLA - Yeah, I knew that!

I've jerked around with fonts too.  I needed to write a 50 page write up, and using Courier was the way to go.  If I'd have tried it with Times, I would have had to wax eloquent on earwax sculptures and how it related to the subject matter.

for looking thru code - Courier
