I've never been to one, so forgive the stupid question.....but here goes.

I'm a legal resident of Maine and am not restricted in any way from owning a long gun. I'm only 20 so obviously I can't get a handgun from a dealer.

My question is this, because of some brilliant gun law down the road any purchase of a long gun that I do must go through an FFL if done out of state.

I'm currently in NY attending college and going to a gun show in NY this weekend. If I find something I like and it's a private citizen trying to sell it, what do I do? Try to find an FFL at the show to run the transfer between the two of us?

I just hope to hell it doesn't end up I can't buy any long guns because of this....

Good question, but i don't know the answer. I would only be guessing. I'm surprised no one has answered it yet.

Seems to me you're currently living in New York, and if a ftf transaction is legal, I don't see how you're breaking any laws.

if you are not of the same state as him you need to go to a ffl and have him do a back ground check (NICS) on you. Once it is done the paperwork just like you got the gun new is filled out.

That is if your state does not prohibit you from having it.

Some states are harder ect but that is the general rule.

I thought I heard that if I reside at one location for more than 30 days in the example of a college I become a resident of that state.
