Currently I have a hub set up, only one computer on the "network". I need the hub setup because I have LANs over here pretty regularly, but can I also plug a wireless router into my hub and have wireless?

I guess I really know nothing about wireless internet. The stuff I've tried to read about it is kind of confusing.

Can anyone give me the rundown on it?

Thanks guys.

Just buy a wireless router with the hub/swtch built in and lose the old hub.

Yes.

The hub will extend your network to the wireless access point which is probably also a router.

here's what you do.  Hook the uplink from your DSL/Cable router/modem to the Accesspoint/Router you buy, then hook the hub up to that.  You'll be fine.

Alright, so could I do something like this:

Run cable modem to this:

www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?description=33-180-008&DEPA=0

Run wire from above wireless router to uplink port of hub.

Run cat5 from wired hub to other computers.

Access wire/wireless simultaneously.

And what product is it I need to buy? Wireless router, wireless access point, etc? I don't know what those do. If you could provide a Newegg link (or similar), that would be helpful.

THANKS a lot guys!

you can just use the router in the link without your current hub, it will have 4 regular RJ-45 ports and will let you do wireless. And you can keep the current hub as a spare or use it for an "Extension" with the uplink portion if you need more than 4 ports.

ETA: example of setup Cable modem > the wireless router in your link > wired / wireless at the same time. (we have a similer setup here)
Note you dont need to buy anything else if you will be wired in, but anyone wishing to use wireless will need an 802.11b or g wireless adaptor.

Get one that supports 802.11g.

I have had better results with the G's over the B's.

YMMV

Best buy has had some good wireless routers with SERIOUS rebates recently.  $89.00 models with $60.00 rebates.  But, you know what they say about rebates.

I have had excellent success with D-Link and horrible results from Belkin and Linksys.

Again, YMMV.

ETA: The D-Link DI-624 has been very good to me.

Got Firewall?

If it were me, I'd get myself a wireless router/firewall.  Not just a NAT box, but something with packet inspection, etc.  They're not pricey.  Plug that into the cablemodem, and plug the hub into it.  Problem solved.

PLEASE PLEASE don't run a cablemodem/DSL modem with no hardware firewall.

I have an 8 port hub plugged into a wireless router.

Don't you need the router for your playstation?

This guy hit the nail on the head (why I need wireless, for Playstation Portable AKA PSP).

I think I need 802.11b support.

What's the difference between a wireless access point and wireless router (or hub...if there is such a thing)?

An access point just provides a wireless link to your network; so your wireless playstation adapter (or computer) will work on the network although you see people calling routers "access points", which I guess they are.

What you want is a Wireless Router\ Firewall\Hub. Then all your computers and game boxes can go on-line; plus you get the hardware firewall.

An 802.11G router will be 802.11b compatible.

I like Linksys.
