I'm thinking about enlisting in the US armed forces somewhere. I heard that you can now sign up to be special forces, granted if you pass the BAR of rigorous training. does anyone know more about this and some of the pros and cons? I know if I do this, I would go to Iraq. and I just got married! I told my wife if I enlist she would get new boobs.lolhug.gif I would love to hear from someone who is a recruiter or is in the program now.

you can enlist in the army on the 18x program whcih guarantees you a shot at completing all the training for special forces. You'll also pick up Sgt after completion.

You may want to go to a site named 'socnet' and read there for a while.

The plain truth is that you likely will no longer be married if you enlist. The special forces and rangers are the worst for life style. Think the worst day of football camp x2 every day for a year bad.

good stuff on the socnet. I'm going to talk to a recruiter tomorrow, and see what he has to offer, I need to do alot of research before I make any decissions on this one! And as for my wife, I wouldn't even think of joining unless I had 100% support, other wise I would end up a divorce statistic. Ps what is OSUT? and what does it do for you?

OSUT = One Station Unit Training. You really need to talk to a recruiter if you don't know what it means. It is Basic and AIT combined. If you don't know what AIT is, then see above recommendation.

whatever buddy, I may not have made the best decisions in my life but I still can offer some decent advice about the Army.

This guy shouldn't be thinking special forces he should be thinking about preparing himself for 30th AG, Sand Hill then airborne school then if he is high speed RIP.

I'm in the same situation as you but I just turned 24 with wife and 2 month old baby. I've been having these feelings that I was supposed to do something and that time is fast running out if I'm ever going to get off my ass and do it. I have been reading alot about enlisting and I'm thinking about an 11B option 40 RIP contract before I get too old. If I get through RIP and can hack it in the 75th for a few years I'd either like to re-enlist 18X SF or quit and get some type of LE job. I know this is like the worst scenario for joining the 75th but I think the maturity I have now than when I was 18 would help me.

I think they opened up 18X to civilians to intice people into a route with like a 80% failure rate so they can send the failures to regualar infantry.

Right now I'm working towards acing the APFT and testing my "mental wall" endurance thing to see what I'm capable of hinking.gif. Theres few places I like better than in the mud and rain carrying a rifle.

Now that ranger is reopened to non-infantry...

does anyone know if you can contract for a skilled job and still go to Ranger school?

I'm thinking for a young gun lover a contract with the army that was airborne, then ranger school, then 45B would be a sweet deal.

Being an armorer sucks.
While everyone is out training, you are doing semi-annual services.
You can't get Ranger School in your contract, you have to get it from your unit.
If you have the cajones to give it a try, baby SF is one hell of a deal.  2 years of the best training you can imagine.
Rangers and SF are two different worlds.
Unless you enjoy abuse, I would recommend SF over Bat boy any day.
You could always try 82nd and then after your first enlistment go for Bat or SF.  82nd is a little (not much) more laid back than Bat but not as brain intensive as Baby SF.
If you aren't hard-on for infantry, 21B (used to 12B) combat engineer is one of the best enlisted MOSs out there.
Lots of demo, pretty hard-corps.  Though they do have female LTs in the mechanized units, so you can always fuck your Platoon leader.  Competition to fuck the female LT is stiffer than going to Ranger School, though.
Good luck.
How well do you run?

Re-enlist 18x?? If you were in th 75th you fill an application for SFAS then go and if you pass you move on. I can attest to being a cherry in Rgr Batt. it sucks but you will have a guaranteed slot to Ranger school unless you f up bad. Once you get your tab your good to go.

Ranger Regiment has other MOS's other than Infantry and have for a while. At least get Airborne school. If it was me I would get Airborne (Rip if you want) and go in as a medic. They are attached to everyone, SF, Rangers etc etc. If you pick either get good at land navigation. Later

Yeah i'm going to take my ASFAB tomorrow, to see if I score high enough for SF. I won't make any major decissions until then. My brother is going to do it as well. We want to sign up under the battle buddy program. So far my wife is being supportive under much persuation.

By the way buster, be sure and make sure that you specify the army still has the "don't ask, dont tell" policy. For you own protection.

Hey anyone have any tips on the ASVAB?

Baby SF Married is going to be a tough row to hoe.
Even bat would be rough.  Do married bat boys live in the barracks?  Not sure how that works.  Earn the tab, live with momma?
Considered straight up infantry.

From what I read on a ranger forum a few guys on there were married in batt, living off-base. They said you'll lose some of the comradere or whatever but on the plus side you'll miss alot of midnight smokings and some of the more shitty details.

If you want it bad enough it can happen. In my contract i got airborne and ranger school, but i was droped from ranger becuase i could not cut it and was not ready. I was later picked up by LRRP after some time in the service.

I advise setting your goals high, and training hard mentally and physically before you enlist if SF is what you really want. It's all about how bad you want it.

No offense, but I wouldn't put bigger boobs as a reason for enlisting.  If she's excited about getting bigger boobs by you enlisting I would seriously reconsider that relationship.  A military wife requires a GREAT deal of patience and love and stick-to-itness.  Who is she trying to impress with her boobs?  Once again, I don't know you or her but make sure you enlist for your reasons...not her's.  And when you do enlist make sure you let her know you will be gone for long periods of time.  Ask her if she is willing to be happy with this.

I agree with scout. Military wives MUST be something special to handle the hardships they face as a service members wife.

No offense, but from your demeanor i suggest taking a support position in a MOS that will train you in a field that will pay the bills once you get out.

I agree with the wife part. we have talked about it alot, and she knows that i will be gone an average of 4-6 months out of the year. the boobs thing was a joke, haha. she said, i don't care about the money if you die! she has said if this is what you want to do, then i will support you in it. You know what my dad said last night? he said i should join the air force!!! what a load of shit! if i'm going to join the military just for health and financial benefits, then why join at all? I can just get financial aid. I want to join to make a difference; I want to actually fight terrorism, and stick it to those bastards in the middle east before they get a chance to conspire against the US on our soil.  thats why i'm doing it, and without the support of my wife, i don't even think i would be able to make it.

SF has been in a contract for a while now...

There was 2 guys in my BT/AIT platoon that had 18X as their contract, one was a NGSF....

Then, we had a former Petroleum Specialist (whatever MOS that is) reclass to Infantry and was going 18X.

As well as in my company, we had a former Aircraft mechanic from the Marines going 18X.

As far as schooling and training, I would by far, go SF.  If you are pretty smart and like working on your toes.
They let you think on your own and work as teams/small number squads and go off on "your own" so to speak.

Ranger is just "drop dead drag them out by brute force" Infantry.
Special Forces is "let's go in undetected, and fuck some shit up" Infantry.

Rangers are a special breed.  Mucho mucho tougher than I'll ever be.
I give them props.

Special Forces is the only "high-speed" thing I'd ever even think about doing

Yep.  The training for Ranger is a lot tougher than SF from what I hear.

SF training is more on the "elite - covert insertion" side.  That's why I'd go SF before Ranger.  I'm not that "hardcore".

Plus, I'd rather learn how to be silent and deadly, than go romping through the woods letting everyone know I'm coming and then still kicking the shit outta them.
