The "Asian" thread reminded me of something.

I work in a smallish, mall bookstore. One day, an African-American girl and a caucasian girl walk up to me and ask:

Where da hood books be at?

Me: [blink] Hood books?

Black chick: Y'know... the hood books. (as though emphasising it would make it any clearer)

White chick: The African-American books.

Me:Ohhhhhh (as the light dawns). They're in with the rest of fiction. Is there a particular author you're looking for?

Them: (looking disappointed) Don't know any names.

What I really want to say: They're in with the rest of fiction. We don't segregate.

Whether or not we have an African-American fiction section is the number 2 question asked (right after "Do you work here?" to which, I swear, I will one day reply with "No. I'm wearing this apron with the name tag, these stupid buttons and carrying 15 copies of The Da Vinci Code because I think it's cool).

The next time you go to a book store, tell a book seller that you're looking for a book but you don't know the title, the author, the subject, or about when it was published but it has a blue cover. Come back and tell me what happens.
