While perusing DU I noticed a new topic stating this at 12:01 Looking for the truth..... ETA can anyone with TV confirm this? I have no tv and it will probably take a while to reach internet news sources. |

Apr 1, 12:07 PM (ET) By VICTOR L. SIMPSON VATICAN CITY (AP) - Pope John Paul II was clinging to life in deteriorating condition Friday, with his breath shallow and his kidneys not functioning properly after suffering heart trouble, the Vatican said. "The general conditions and cardio-respiratory conditions of the Holy Father have further worsened," the Vatican said in a statement. Earlier, it said the 84-year-old pontiff suffered massive heart problems and was in "very grave" condition, but he was lucid and spent the morning celebrating Mass and receiving top aides, asking one to read him the biblical account of Christ's Crucifixion and burial. |
No, they will announce his death before the cardinals arrive. In today's day and age it is simply not possible to keep something like that secret. Better to be out front for the flock rather than keep them in the dark. I would be surprised if the cardinals are all not in route by now anyway. |
i understand that...my comment was that they would be contacted before going public not actually wait until they get there |
| Sorry missed that, yes absolutely. With modern communications that is fairly easy to do. I sadly suspect there will be announcement this evening and I rather suspect we will know a new Pope within 24 hours. Pope John Pail II was determined to see Cardinals of like mind installed, a more conservative branch of the Church and I fully suspect there is almost a fait accompli as to whom the next Pope will be. |
i agree and i also would not be surprised if they have not already started to the Vatican. |

When i was kid, my family & i went to Rome & the Vatican, he passed within 30 feet from us & he blessed our general area, i was around 9 yrs old, & i will never forget it. He is and will always be a great & honorable man who gave all he had to the world, he was the epitome of selflessness & all that is good & just in the world. There are not many people left like him in the world, with his death we will have lost a great man. May God be with him. |
![]() Don't like the Pope, don't post in this thread... The Pope is as much 'just another man' as President Reagan was 'just another man'. ![]() ETA - I'm not even Catholic, either... |

This pope has been a godly man who has faithfully served Christ and his followers. Everything he has done has been out of love for God and people. We are rapidly running out of the giants who brought down the Soviet Union. Reagan is gone and soon so will JPII. Willian Casey died years ago. Charlie Wilson is retiring back to Angelina County Texas. He is in his 70's now. Unless Lech Walensa has stopped smoking, he will likely be gone before the end of this decade. Lady Thatcher's health isn't good. (My God, what a marvelous world leader the Iron Lady was!) Willian F. Buckley is pretty aged, too. When I was a little kid, many WWII vets were still in their 30's. They are dying 1000+ a day. I remember when Winston Churchill, Eisenhower, MacArther, and Bradly died. The list of Giants of the 21st Century is still pretty short. I'll put W on the top of that list. It's a dang shame that I won't likely get to see what is going on 50 years from now. But, if I live to be 100 and am still able to get around, what a story I will have to tell. Heck, I remember as a kid when we would stop and point at helicopters...they were that relatively new. |
