I have a client who wants me to communicate by Fax and Fax only.  It's a PITA doing so as my fax machine at home doesn't work well.

I have an "all in one" system printer meaning I'm suppose to be able to be able to fax with my computer but I don't know how and now that I have DSL I'm not even sure if I can receive faxes with my computer.  The software that I got with my printer has never worked well.

Any suggestions?  I really hate going out and buying a whole new fax machine for just this one client.

IF you installed all of the software correctly for the all in one, faxing from your computer should be as simple as opening up the document you want to send on your computer, choose "file" and then "print".

When you choose print, you should see a "fax printer" or something like that.

Just choose the "fax printer" and hit print.

This will launch a wizard that will ask you all the info, fax number, cover page etc etc.

Keep in mind this is to send documents that are ON your computer only.
If you have peice of paper in your hand you need to fax you'll have to scan it on your computer first then follow my instructions above.

If it is in fact a piece of paper in your hand you need to fax, you'd be better off using the actual fax machine on the all in one anyways, it saves a step.

Let me know if you need anymore help.

There are online fax services available that make it pretty easy also.

First.. I hate all-in-ones, they never work well as they try to do too much with to little, and it is ususaly the software that sucks (all-in-ones that cost over $1,000 on the other hand.)

Second, you should be able to use the fax system of the all-in-one without using the computer it is connected to.

Third, I'd imagine you can use the fax with dsl, just use that blocker dongle thing you get for your voice phones.

All your other phones had to have a filter installed on the line. I think he is talking about using one of those. I was also pretty sure you had to have your phone line hooked up to that fax machine as well, unless you are using some broad band phone system. The used to be free, but now everyone charges.

I guess I just need to try sending another fax.

So you already sent one?

I'm guessing it didn't come back yet?

Who are you testing with?

I think the all in ones do fine.
I would never buy all of those items individually with the prices of the all in one where they were at.

Unless you have a specific need for a higher end item.

I haven't sent a fax yet.  I tried all my friends who own faxes but none of them seeem to be at their desks right now!  My 3 in one was about a $100 bucks.  I needed a printer & a scanner so it seemed like a good deal and for the most part it's worked fine [I do occassionaly have to reinstall the software so the printer works, which is a hassle].  I have never gotten the fax to work correctly.

You said the fax has never worked.

Do you mean the manual fax (normal fax machine) or do yolu mean the desktop faxing(faxing from your computer)? Or both?

One of these on your fax line, in between the fax machine and the wall.

Let me clarify, there is two ways to fax with this all in one.
You can use the manual fax machine it works like a normal fax machine, feed it a paper, dial the number on the front and hit send.

You can send a fax from say a word document on your actual computer, this will send the fax of whatever you were working on in your computer.

I'm assuming both these methods never worked for you?

I use efax.com for receive only.  Receive only is free and it has works great.  You get your own number and its emailed to you.

Transmitting faxes will cost you.

Yes, I do not see how I can mannually feed anything into this all in one system though.  Just send docs that are already scanned into my PC, which is fine.  I just tried to fax a friend but failed to get a dial tone?

As I feared. You are still going to need a phone line attached to your all in one for it to work.

Do I connect the phone line to my computer?

You should have a phone jack built into the all in one. You will also need another filter when you do. So steal one from another phone, unless you got extras when you had your dsl put in.

Patty, DSL uses the phone line going into your office.
The phone line carries the normal everyday telephone conversations,
and the DSL signal is carried on the same line, but at a much higher frequency
so you can't hear the digital data going back and forth.
You can hook up you all in one into the phone line like you would a regular phone
or fax.
The all in one should have a dual input for a regular phone, or it has
an line out jack that you hook up to the wall or maybe the phone itself.
I'm sorry but I don't know your setup so I can't help you too much.
In short, you can use the all in one as a fax on your phone line that carries the DSL signal.

Patty,

Having your home phone lines converted to DSL means that the same analog phone lines now also carry digital signals as well.  When using standard (analog) phones on a DSL line, you must use a filter on the line in order to remove the digital DSL signals, or the analog phones won't be able to communicate with the phone company.  You should have been given at least a few filters for your phones when your DSL was installed.  They are a little box about the size of a large pack of BigRed gum, with a 6" cord on one end and a jack on the other.  You plug the filter in between the wall socket and the phone.

Anyway, what you need is to connect a phone line to your All-In-One (AIO) device so that you can send and receive faxes with it.  The AIO should have a fax modem built in just like a regular fax machine, so you shouldn't need a separate one in your computer itself.

The line that goes to the AIO needs to be filtered just like your phones.  The easiest way to do this is to get a "duplex jack", which is a little box that turns one jack into two.  Plug this into the DSL filter on the phone closest to the AIO, and plug the phone into one of the splitter's jacks.  This leaves the other jack open so that you can run a phone line to the AIO.

Right on so far... make sure your all-in-one is plugged directly into a phone line that has one of those DSL filters, and you should be able to scan a document and fax directly with the all-in-one.  What model of all-in-one do you have?  Feel free to IM me, and I'll help by phone if I can.
