Well I got a new computer and want to burn some DVD's. What programs do yall use to burn DVD's and rip movie DVD's?

Lets see, how do I put this.  Will Shrink allow you to backup your legally owned copies that are encrypted?(Ive never used it before)  If it won't and you want a 2nd copy in case your original becomes scratched, DVDdecrypter is free and works great as well.

DVD shrink will NOT decrypt Sony's latest encryption, but the latest version of DVD Decrypter will.

Install DVD43 it will decrypt all current copy protection, install DVDShrink to shrink the movie to fit on a single layer DVD, install DVD Decrypter so that DVDShrink can utilize the burning function for the ISO image created.  You now have the ability to open your DVD with DVDShrink and decrypt and burn any current copy protected DVD to your blank DVD.  All of these programs are free.

I use DVDShrink, NERO and AnyDVD.  Using those 3 programs, there isn't a DVD I haven't been able to copy perfectly.  DVDShrink rips the data off the DVD, NERO burns the new DVD copy and AnyDVD removes any encryption used by the original DVD.

Thanks for the links, I will have to give those a try. I bought Nero and another DVD Ripping software at walmart, niether one would work. After $60 + bucks, I can't even buck-up my own DVD's.

That's because you need a DVD ripper and a program that decrypts the DVDs.  NERO is excellent.  They just don't include the illegal software you need.

Will any of these programs change the region code?  I bought a stack of DVDs in the U.S. on vacation, not thinking about the region problem (they're all R1, I'm in R3).  I could  easily view them by buying another DVD player for a mere $60, however.  These have all ben released everydamnwhere already;  I don't see why they bothered to put a region code on Red  Dawn (19 years old now) or The Patriot (10 years old) since region coding waas supposedly about rolling out movies at different times in different areas. (Why'd I buy them?  Try to find *those* outside of WalMart. . . .  Never did find They Live.)

DVDFab express, I use it to burn a working copy of every DVD right after I buy them.  The platinum version can do 1-1 copying on either a SL (spans on 2 discs) or DL (puts it all on one disc).  The express version will compress to 1 DVD, but even on a big screen the quality looks the same to me.

The fair-use issues have not been worked out yet, and until they have I assume I have the right to copy the discs I own and use the copy.

What is your question?

In order to go from VHS to DVD you have to run the VHS through a mini-dv camera. Then you need to use a program like WinDV to rip it to MPEG2. Once you do that you need to use TMPGnc to rip the mpeg2 into ISO format. Then you use TMPGnc DVD editor to create a DVD and burn it with NERO.

That is one way. I record off my cable box using an All-in-Wonder card straight to mpeg2 then burn to DVD with DVD Architect (with menus). Simple.

+1 and regardless if the outcome,  I reserve the right to backup all of my expensive and fragile media.
