... My daughter (5) just had an MMR (mumps, Measles, Rubella) vaccine on Friday. She has had one before and all was OK as far as I can remember. Today i notice a 1" x 2" red spot (rash like) mark around the injection site. We called the dr and the nurse said that was nothing to be worried about. Anyone else have this happen to their kid... ... Bride even says its nothing to worry about. My mistake was to go on one of these Anti-Vaccine sites and they gave all these nightmare scenarios of what goes on. HELP!!!!! |
Well now thats three people... I think I will relax when I have about 100 people tell me that Just with our kids we worry our asses off. Especially with her. Everytime she goes to the doc I chomp at the bit. It just seems that with her there always is something that goes on. |

It is a foreign protein reaction. It is nothing to worry about unless she has an immediate reaction (allergic, most common to influenza vaccinations as they are typically made from chicken eggs). Single vaccinations have too little proteins/amino acids to cause any visible reactions but combinations can. Rest assured, mercury from thimersol is NOT a problem as it is a mercurial sulfide, relatively non-toxic and cannot be metabolized to methyl mercury, the ONLY highly toxic form of mercury. |
MY MAN!!!!! This is a great explanation and makes a lot of sense to me. When it comes health issues and stuff like that I am clueless... put a screwdriver and wrench in my hand I'll fix anything.THANK YOU! |
ARe you one of those parents that take her to the doc everytime she gets a couch or sneeze? You will grow out of it. Now , unless my kids have broken bones I rarely take them in. SGatr15 |
No but I have been known to take her in when she got a sofa or a dining room table... This is the daughter with the heart defects. A fall that cuts her mouth open can be deadly to her. We have to get her antibiotics ... PRONTO! So yes, she does have to be handled a little differently than the others. |
Those anti-vaccine people are (for the most part) insane tin-foil hat wearing retards. Lilsten to your wife. |
You are most welcome. Now don't go and get those industrial strength vaccinations mixed up with the pediatric types. I vividly remember walking the gauntlet in basic training, getting shot in both arms multiple times with needleless guns. Damn, those had some reactions. Typhoid was a major PITA, pain in the arm- TWICE! |
Hey I realize that some nightmare scenarios can happen... but you always hear the bad stuff. some of those scenarios on that site were AWFUL! |
Well, let's see...... decisions, decisions. Maybe you're thinking it would have been better to let her get the mumps (I was fortunate enough to have those twice on both sides - lots of fun); or perhaps measles? That was just absolutely hilarious for me - still have some scars from them. A 1x2 rash doesn't sound like much of a tradeoff to me. NMSight |
Chill. Read the post, it helps a lot. |
You kids can POTENTIALLY be hit by a car or kidnapped by a murderous pedophile every time they leave the house. However, that is not a good reason to never let them step foot outside until they are 21. Same logic applies - you can potentially get some pretty bad negative consequences out of vaccinations, but they are not a good reason for not getting them. The benefits of vaccinations far outweigh the potential costs, but there is no 100% guarantee - just like there is no guarantee that a jet plane will not crash into your house in 10 minutes. |
I NEVER said she shouldnt get the vaccine... actually with her condition she should get them. But I NEVER ONCE said that she shouldnt get vaccines.. I am not one of those that oppose them. I got them. my wife got them, my oldest got them, my middle one and my youngest are in their stages in life where they are getting them. I just dont like "reactions" to them... WHY am I worried. my brother had a SEVERE reaction to a shot of penicillin.... My mom to this day cringes when she talks of that episode. |
Sorry if I misunderstood. I can absolutely understand that it must be pretty frightening to watch trace amounts of diseases be injected into your child, and worry about adverse reactions! Reason 1047 why I don't have kids |
Oh I wasnt quoting you... I was quoting NMSight. I think he misunderstood where I was coming from. |
Most vaccinations are NOT viable pathogens but rather fragments of the proteins off either the external cell membranes, virus structure or denatured toxins. Very few vaccinations are modified live virii and the smallpox isn't even smallpox but a virial form similar to smallpox. |
Isn't it cowpox or has that long passed for being used? |
No, I knew where you were coming from since I was in the same place 25 years ago with our then 5 year old. When I was a kid getting shots I never heard anything about possible bad reactions; as a parent your perspective changes completely. Since I forgot to include this in my first post I'll do it here >>> |
Right. But FDA approved sources have dwindled. It can be recultured but that takes time. Basically its made from the pus of cowpox sores on cattle. |
No. You have under 1000 posts therefore you are a troll!!! ![]() Just kidding just Kidding!!! I'll tell ya, you are right...as a parent your perspective DOES change completely!!!! If it happens to me... OH WELL but when it has to do with your own kid.... AHHHH YOU LOSE SLEEP!! I heard that you NEVER stop worrying... doesnt matter if they are 3 or 33. |

Don't worry about a small rash, but don't hesitate to bug your pediatrician with all the crazy questions you have. Do what makes the most sense to you, it'll be all right. You're a pretty level-headed guy, even if you do live in the land of fruits and nuts . Trust me, you could bug them until YOU'RE sick of it, and still be so far from the worst they see that they'll think of you as one of the "good ones." These are your kids, worry away. It's your job! |

let me straighten this out LOL (I just ran across this) it was not a rash..it was a red, hot, swollen area....not soft but not rock hard (baby had a hard lump under a shot site) She was fine with first MMR but I also refused to let them give it to her with any other shot... anyhow, the red sploch was not a listed side effect/reaction. DFD had spots after her MMR shot ....boy was that a fun one! (mild measle rash) So we called nurse advice line...blah blah blah bendardryl...mark the outskirts of the mark...should it spread, get streaky, she doesnt use her arm or neck stiffness bring her in. Show to nurse tomorro (today) at the TB reading Done Nurse was a bit concerned but not with the actual mark....as it was a bit smaller but the odd part is the redness went down the arm away from the injection site, the injection site was on the upper outskirts of the red mark She kept asking for description of the nurse that gave it....wanted details about her... makes me think it was given wrong |
... Thanks a lot. I bet you offer drowning victims a glass of water to drink too.
