Where can I learn about duck hunting? Any duck hunters here? I want to try it but know nothing about it.

(Join a local hunting club, make some friends, ask someone to show you the ropes.)

It's hard to learn about duck hunting from just reading about it, there's a fair amount of stuff involved.

well if you are ever out in Colorado between November and February I'll take you out for ducks and geese.  Best advise I can give you is find a lease/club to join and flat out tell everyone that you have no idea what you are doing.  Most of the old guys love to teach noobs who want to learn.

You don't want to go duck hunting. Its very boring and you can't use your tactical weapons.

Duck hunting sucks. Don't even bother trying. Go shoot stationary paper targets. Its very exciting.

I hunt ducks.  I have decoys and set up a blind and I have my dog and radio to keep me company.  It's actually a lot of fun.

Okay, before you get all twisted up, the Hometown section of ar15.com for NY & NJ includes all of those from those states. ar15.com/forums/forum.html?b=8&f=9

So yeah, I was actually trying to be helpful there and telling you that you could find other people from your area on ARFCOM and that you could then go somewhere away from LI to hunt ducks, but I see you'd rather be pissy.

They're a little more difficult than an upland game bird.  Patty

Are you serious?

Dude I'm sorry, I'll punch the card right here, I thought you were being sarcastic!

I guess that's what a night of ARFCOM does to a man.

I knew they only allowed hunting with a shotgun in the southern zone, but I thought hunting fowl on LI was illegal and that deer hunting was left up to game control, at least that's what I had heard, must be wrong, my bad!

dont worry about it, no problem. I know how people can get on here sometimes. Maybe you right about fowl hungting on LI,

This is what I read, I hope its up to date because if it is not I am not going to be doing any duck hunting, haha.

Waterfowl

Long Island holds the majority of New York's wintering waterfowl. Tens of thousands of ducks and geese of at least 28 species are available to Long Island's waterfowlers. The various seasons run from early October through mid-February. The early sea duck season offers generous limits and a long season to those hunting scoters, eiders and old squaw in Long Island Sound and the Peconic Bays.

Many duck hunters pursue the dabbler species, rigging primarily for the prized black duck, with mallards, pintail, widgeon, gadwall and green-winged teal filling out the bag limit. Those that seek out the diving duck species generally set for broadbill (greater scaup) and are rewarded with a variety of other open water species, including bufflehead, goldeneye and redhead. Most waterfowlers hunt on the tidal marshes, bays and creeks found along our shores; Canada geese and brant are popular in the western bays of the south shore.

Most tidal areas are publicly owned and can be hunted without special permission; access, however, is often difficult. The successful hunt generally requires a seaworthy grassboat, well-camouflaged with salt hay, or a scooter painted to resemble waves or ice for open bay broadbill rigs. For the hunter willing to scout for land, some good freshwater shooting of puddle ducks can still be found in eastern Suffolk. The east end also provides excellent goose shooting from leased lands or guided blinds. Consult regulations for the current year for restrictions on certain species. See the brochure An Introduction to Waterfowl Hunting on Long Island, available from the DEC Region 1 office in Stony Brook, for more information.

Well, I guess Suffolk is the good county on the Island then, it seems that they do allow a lot of sportsmen opportunities still. I knew that Nassau was blacked out, but its good to see that Westchester and Suffolk are still viable hunting grounds.

The NYSDEC site says that the Long Island zone is

Long Island Zone - That area consisting of Nassau and Suffolk counties and their tidal waters, and that area of Westchester County and its tidal waters southeast of Interstate Route 95.

The seasons are a little shorter, but still open enough. One important thing about duck hunting is identifying what duck it is before you shoot it, because of the way the seasons go back and forth.
