my buddy and I were sitting around yesterday, discussing the recent tragic MN school shooting VS the equally tragic Columbine massacre.  We both agreed that the Columbine event had far more media coverage than the MN event.

I believe MN has gotten less coverage because of the avenue the perp took to get his hands on the weapons he used (police officer grand dad VS through "gun show loop hole") and crying out for more gun control will do no good in preventing another tragedy...

I have wondered the same thing myself.
But, I have no doubt that they would say whatever they want and brush right over the LEO gun part.

Actually I have a different take.  MN is getting less attention because these were poor folks on a Native American reservation.  The Columbine community is quite wealthy.  Rich folks get attention and thats all there really is to it.

Living here in MN we hear more of the little details. The main reason the press coverage is less intense is because the Red Lake Reservation is "a sovereign nation"., they call the shots on their land. The media has been restricted to a central location and forbidden to go outside of it. The Tribe has not given permission to the press to talk to members and the funerals are off limits except to tribe members. This could change but it is unlikely.

The guy here in Brookfield that shot up 7 people at a hotel church ceremony was easily a mini-Columbine-esque haul for the Milwaukee news media.

My favorite news clip as of late featured a copy of the 12 page poilice report sitting on a pedastal - the news camera would sweep by the papers of the report in slo-mo, like it was a mob witness or something.

I think that the Terri Schiavo event is taking the headlines.  I was right about the Redlake, Minn. shooting.  Prozac was involved just as in Columbine.

I think it's a whole combination of everything you have all said.

Poor people as opposed to the rich of of Columbine, Terry Schiavo, the tribe not letting the reporters full access, etc.

Despite the reasons and the current situation, one thing remains important...

...We should NOT let our guard down on this. Remain vigilant! If there is ANY way that the anti's can use this to push their agenda I guarantee that they will try to take full advantage of it!

There were reporters and cameras on the scene at Columbine as it was happening.  It was a longer, more drawn-out event.  That makes for better television.  I get the impression that the MN shooting was over pretty quickly and no cameras were rolling.

One possibility; concern that heavy media coverage might inspire copy-cat killers.

I'm just wondering why a Native American would be a member on mutliple Neo-Nazi websites...

Same reason they all go skinhead or goth or queer, no ones paying attention to them or they are being picked on for some reason. They're not fitting in. A piece of ass and that kid would have been right as rain.

I personally don't think the news media is even remotely concerned about that.
