My kid comes home from school and tells me a bunch of kids in his class called him a racist. They had watched a movie about the Vietnam War. After the movie the teacher asked the class for some of the names U.S. servicemen used for the Vietmanese. My son said he raised his hand and his response was;"gooks". he said all of a sudden they said he was a racists and shouldn't give that answer and the teacher appeared to be upset with his response. My son said it was in the movie. |
Welcome to the american public school system. They'll send a kid to the crisis counsellor for drawing a picture of a gun, call him a racist for answering a leading question, and generally jam their shitty agenda in your face via your kid whether your or he like it or not. Can you tell I work in a school?

Nominated and seconded. Mr. Chairman, I call the question. Go talk to the teacher. |
+1....my daughter recently told me they can't even draw a gun. The teacher also tried to expouse her Democratic POV during the run up to the election until my daughter let her now that we have a two party system and not everyone shared her opinion. We had problems with the teacher until my wife and I made a few visits to the school. Since we frequently volunteer at the school, everything smoothed out in a hurry. Some of the stuff they teach kids these days is so PC it's pathetic. The know it alls aren't even aware that Pluto is no longer considered a planet . That went over well when my daughter corrected her on that point in class. Not bad for a 10 year old.Bomber |

It was an innapropriate question for the teacher to ask in the first place. I think there are more important lessons to be learned from the US involvement in Vietnam than what ethnic slurs we came up with to refer to them as. The teacher is the problem here...your son did nothing wrong. |
I'm sure it must have several meanings because as a kid we always used it to mean 'penis'.
So your son does exactly what the teacher asks him to do, then punishes him for doing it. The teacher is a moron and needs a good bitch-slap upside the head. |
Same basic thing happened when I corrected them re "the outermost planet"....Pluto has an eccentric orbit & dips inside of Neptune's orbit for ~ 20 years, making Neptune the 9nth planet (from Jan 1979-Feb 1999) & Pluto 8th for a bit. But the book says Pluto is #9 & that's that! It's DoublePlus Ungood & CounterRevolutionary whenever the the well read student actually knowing more about the subject than the teacher. I'm lucky they didn't try to gork me full of Ritalin for questioning authority. |
It's a trap! ![]() Seriously, I'd do like what RikWriter said - meet with that teacher ASAP and get to the bottom of what happened. Make sure the teacher RESOLVES the issue by APOLOGIZING to your kid in front of the class. The teacher needs to apologize to your kid for 1) getting upset at your kid in front of the class for simply answering the question based on what was in the movie they just watched and for 2) letting other kids get the impression that your kid was a racist. The teacher should never have allowed other kids to think your child was a racist - the teacher's disapproving response to your kid's answer was all that was needed for the other kids to believe your kid was in the wrong. The teacher needs to apologize in front of the class and set this straight. Don't back off this. |

I am not clear on what the "right" answer would have been That was one of the names the U.S. Servicemen called them....... When I went to school(70's) I had some lousy teachers Many decent teachers Several great teachers Not one of them ever let us know what party they supported They taught us about government\freedom(the inherent conflict) They taught us that WE needed to look at the situation and make up OUR minds And if we didn't, we were passing up an opportunity that most countries lacked |
. That went over well when my daughter corrected her on that point in class. Not bad for a 10 year old.
